I just started orientation as a sub nurse, and the other nurses go by Miss or Mrs ::last name::.
I'm pretty young (early 20's) and my last name can be kind of hard to pronounce. I was thinking of just telling the students to just call me by my first name or Miss ::first name:: if they want to/have to use a formal title.
I'm not really big on formalities, the way I see it is that we're all people here. No need to call me Mrs or Miss. However I do realize this may not go over well in a structured school environment.
what do your students call you? Should I just go with what everyone else goes by? I feel like it would be strange having high schoolers call me miss :last name:: when I'm not that much older than them..
I go by Nurse Firstname, but the prek kids call me Miss Firstname because that's what they call their teachers and I'm ok with that. I don't like to be called Mrs. Lastname. Too formal for me and I have a funky last name that's hard for kids to get right. Come to think of it, I bet none of the kids in my buildings know my last name because I've always gone by my first name.
I don't get called by my name very much, not in a rude way, just that kids come in my office and it's pretty obvious they are here to see me, since I am the only adult in here. One student calls me Nurse T.... (last name). Or Mrs. T.....
I wanted the students to call me Nurse D.... (first name). But the principal who was here when I was hired "requested" I use my last name.
There is an entire group of students who call me "Momma D" from show choir, because I help out with that group. That throws everyone off when there are non-show choir kids in my office and a show choir kid comes in and says "Hey Momma D".
I go by Ms. Last Name, just like every other person in this building. Students are not allowed to call any adult by their first name as a rule and I stick to it.
However...I often just get called "Nurse." When that happens with a student, I have been known to look at this, point at my name sign (which is on my door) and state: "I have a name. Would you like me to call you simply Student?"
When my son was in school here, many of the kids called me by my first name...no biggie, as we got further away from his time in school and I had less of a personal relationship, it reverted back to Ms XYZ. Every once in awhile I have a kid call me by my first name usually as they are seniors) but often it is the SpEd kids for some reason.
Makes no never mind to me, as long as they are respectful!
Usually it's just "Nurse"... I try to correct that by getting them to add my last name too. We have a class that is primarily that does call me Nurse first name which i'm okay with, everyone goes by first names in that room, even the superintendent. I have one student that calls me mom:D , but she drives in to work with me every day
I really don't care what the kids call me...I went with Nurse Firstname but most of them call me The Nurse, which kind of bugs me when I overhear the office staff call me that. The principal calls me Nurse Lastname, which puts me in the mind of Nurse Ratchet. I am fine with first name but apparently that's frowned on. The principal overheard my BFF's granddaughter call me by me first name as she's used to, and she was dressed down a bit for doing so. I really prefer first name; I think "the nurse", especially by the other adults in the building, is less respectful because it feels like they don't care enough to even know my name.
