I Quit My Job Today! I'm so relieved!

Yep! Quit the job today! Worked half a day, and quit. Won't get into the specifics because I'm suing the hospital, and won't stop there. I'll be on Dr. Phil telling the world about the pains of being a nurse today, and writing every political head that is involved with healthcare making sure they are brought up to date on the pains of nursing as well. I have a strong voice, and I intend to use it for my profession.

Going back to travel nursing, starting with seeking a travel contract in my hometown, then elsewhere. No more BS from those who love to strangle the shick out of nurses today. :nono:

Going on vacation for a few days before I get started with the lawsuit. I believe in standing up for what I believe in even if no one else believes what I believe. That is their choice to disagree, and my choice to pursue what I believe to be justice for myself as a professional nurse.

I'm going to make the world hear what is wrong with nursing today if it is the last thing I take on in my life. :nurse:

Glad to hear that you are relieved. Best wishes!

Renee,

The main thing now is that you are on your way to healing. Your relief will alleviate much of that bottled up stress and rage. Have Dr Phil give me a call (I may have to go on with a fake nose and glasses, but I'm all for educating the public)

Go enjoy a well deserved vacation!:p

I'm afraid nursing has made a 180 degree turn in the last 15 years and there is no going back.

Technology, drug delivery, modern therapies, insurance companies, government involvement in care have taken us

out of nurturing roles and into delivery roles.

The families will have to provide the nurturing.

Yesterday, I collected four rather complex specimens for the lab to send to a "regional" lab.

Started 4 I.V.'s and 2 PICC lines.

Administered numerous IV antibiotics....

Documented two different patients q 3 hr ortho statics and medication times and actually put it on paper and in the doctors progress notes, so the doc could see the patients response to her medications therapy.

Called two docs ABG results. Contact Respiratory with new orders. Implemented changes in patients resp. care. Monitored responses... documented in the computer.

Scanned meds and med charges// more "computer work."

Consulted with a doc on the pro's/con's of sending a pt home or to our SNU/SNIF unit.

I left work feeling I had really made a positive difference in these patients outcomes,

but, as far as anything on a personal level....

none of these patients have a clue as to what was going

on "behind the scenes"...........

as to what "their nurse" was doing all day.

I spent a lot of time on the computer/on the phone/ , and taking specimens directly to the lab personnel who then prepared them for shipment, spent a lot of time conferencing with docs/ in discussion with a social worker re: obtaining free or low cost prescriptions for an indigent patient.....

And, I am a "bedside" nurse... I was working on a medical unit this week;

I was assigned 5 patients yesterday.

None of these patients, if asked, would be able to describe what I did for them on my shift or would say they were particularly impressed with the care they actually observed me giving them. The aides spent the time with them, ..... from the patients point of view.

For every 5 minutes I spent WITH THE PATIENT, I spent 40 minutes taking care of the patient------ out of the patient's

field of vision....doing stuff the pt is totally unaware of.

Make sense??

Most of what I do for patients these days involves technology, communication skills, awareness of where the patient is in the progression of care/therapy, and knowing what needs to be done next..... and communicating this to the labs, social workers, doctors, case manager, etc., ad infinitum.

Renee, best of luck to you, but I think it is beating a dead horse.

Let it go, spend your energies finding your niche.

This world needs more caring people like you.

But, be careful that your caring doesn't come at a cost to yourself. What you are considering undertaking will come at

a considerable drain on you....it will be very stressful. Extremely..

Take care of # 1 first.

Families WILL step in and assist their loved ones.

We must communicate to family members what they can do.

Most are amenable.

Glad to hear it Renee!!!:D I quit my own crappy job about a year ago, and it was the best thing I ever did! It's sometimes easy to stand still in life, but it seldom brings great happiness:)

Hey Renee, I'm with you all the way.

Read my new posts on the CWU site, other than those you read earlier.

And while you're at it, why bother with Oprah or Dr Phil? Why not go all the way to the top!

Mmmm, hmmmm! ;) I do mean Dateline, 60 Minutes, a TV news station, etc. That'll get em running!

We are one and the same when it comes to being our Dad's kids. And our Dad can beat anyone, no matter who, or how big it is, or they are.

Here's a great BIG (((((((((((((HUG)))))))))and a :kiss

Sounds like you have given up on a sucky job but NOT on nursing as a profession as yet. I'm relieved we won't be losing you and I was worried that you had given up hope which would be way more serious than getting out... take a deep breath and start living your future!

Stand behind you all the way!:kiss

I can just imagine how great it felt to walk out of that hospital for the last time. I'm sure we have all dreamed about that very same thing. I truly admire your spunk. Good luck to you, and thanks for being such a supporter of 'everynurse'.

passingthru, your reply is so eyeopening. I wish it could be printed up and widely distributed.
