Happy Nurse's Week! You ROCK (literally a rock given to RN's for Nurse's Week)!

Published

A Kaiser Hospital in Antioch, CA presented these ROCKS to their nurses for Nurse's Week.  I found this on Bonnie Castillo's fb page today.

Bonnie Castillo, RN, is Executive Director of National Nurses United (NNU), California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/ NNOC).  https://www.facebook.com/NNUBonnie/posts/1200529727048154

In all my years of working in healthcare (almost 40), I have never seen anything more insulting and pathetic.  I hope Kaiser gets publicly flogged for this.

At the hospital that I am leaving, they give a rock to someone every month and call it "the rock solid award". Have done so for years. It's the same rock, it just gets passed back and forth.

@Davey Do you are a treasure. Please never leave us again!

I could think of a few "encouraging" phrases to write on the rocks before regifting them to the dear leaders.

They're too cheap to buy everyone their own rock!  This just keeps getting better.

I mean......is it mounted on a base, like a trophy or some such nonsense?  Why the heck are these places choosing rocks??  I mean bronze a flippin' stethoscope or something.  Not quite as bad?  DITCH the trophys.  C'mon!!  Give us status, pay, staffing, benefits, time off, real recognition for the professionals we are.

I have a whole front yard full of smooth lovely rocks, they make my drought friendly garden lovely.  Would I ever dream of bringing them to work to give out to my colleagues as appreciation for the work they do?  Seriously, who comes up with this stuff.  Insulting and pathetic.

To all of healthcare.....KEEP your rocks to yourselves.

OMG! we got rocks too! LOL

I worked at a nursing school, that when you subbed for someone or something else that made the Dean's job easier....you were labeled a "Rock Star". The Dean put the rocks in a bin that was very close to the door frame so that if you entered in a hurry, all the rocks would scatter. After picking them up (and someone else said ....I knocked the rocks onto the floor  too) I but them in a magnetic container that was impossible to knock off. I said something to the Dean about "you need to think about how you establish and post your great ideas." The next week there were 5 rocks on my desk saying I am a "rock star"

While the potential for jokes is amazing this is a definite WOW! What are they thinking??? Here I thought all the cheap company branded stuff was a bit insulting. Sheesh, I guess I was wrong!

I guess they meant well.

But that is about the cheapest gift I have ever heard of for Nurses' Week.

The idea guy will probably get promoted.

Maybe next year they will give a feather.  You know "a feather in your cap" thing.

One employer used to give us grocery store gift certificates for Christmas and TG.  That was a useful gift.

Secretaries get lunch at a nice place during work hours.  Or flowers or both.

Nurses get a plastic water bottle that you can't keep on your med cart because of OSHA and there's no time to use it if it's in the break room because there is no time for breaks.  Torture.

I worked at a place where they hired some food trucks for lunch for Nurse's week.

The hospital had always felt that doing something that was just for nurses to celebrate nurses was unfair to non-nurses, so all previous nurses week activities and now the food trucks were open to all staff.

The food trucks were so popular that the wait for food after ordering was half-an-hour or more.  The food trucks pointed out to the hospital administrators that a lot of people were ordering but then leaving before their food was ready so the administrators made an announcement that if you couldn't wait for more than half-an-hour for your food that you couldn't order.

Coincidentally, the same hospital administrators had just reinforced that nurses were only allowed a 30 minute lunch break and were not allowed to combine breaks to make the lunch break longer.

Everyone but the nurses, who were prohibited from taking part, enjoyed the free lunch in honor of nurses week.

That is a serious case of ridiculousness.

I once had an employer that gave out gift cards for Christmas.  This would be followed by a memo asking for them back so they could be donated to charity.  Pathetic.

I worked for a hospital that did (almost) the same thing. Every Christmas they would have people coming to the units soliciting for donations to the hospital. Didn't seem so bad at first until over the years their gifts to staff got super cheap and cheaper, but yet there they were still asking employees for money every year! Here is your rock (or fill whatever cheap thing) now how much do you want to give us.

I also once received an expired coupon for a cookie in the cafeteria (for some good deed etc), I thought well they probably have some kind of agreement to accept them, nope, trekked all the way to the cafeteria but no cookie! Thanks admin!
