Areas of nursing you would NOT like?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

When you were in nursing school were there any areas of nursing that you knew ahead of time that you did NOT want to get into. And did you have you mind set on one area?

What were those areas?

OR didn't like that at all it was the longest day of my life. The surgical tech and Dr were the only ones getting to do anything. We only had 1 day there but that's the impression I got. Our nurse just sat and charted then counted gauze.

Specializes in Home Health; Hospice.

I didn't think I wanted to be a hospice nurse, and I would ignore those who talked about it. However, my first nursing job out of the gate is that of a hospice nurse. I love it so far. The mistake is trying to decide what area of nursing you want to be in before you have looked into all of them. Take notice during clinical about what you like/dislike about each area. If you want to go on to rn after lpn, you want to be where you can get a variety of experience. I recommend giving all areas a fair try before settling in. That's the beauty of nursing, you can change fields and still keep being a nurse.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Academics.

Like many new nurses, I thought I wanted ICU or ER. First job on a tele floor, and I realized I'm a floor nurse at heart. Strange huh?

I've had some of the ICU nurses ask me during transfers, "So, when are you coming up here?" I just smirk and say, "Never! I keep you employed by sending all my patients to you! You need me down there."

As for ER...too task-oriented for my liking. Lost interest a long time ago.

Knew right out out of school that ortho, L/D, OR, rehab, LTC, and straight neuro were not for me all the time. I float, so I see everything floor related, and I love it. I'll float until I need benefits or my body breaks down with all the walking.

Specializes in Pedi.

Geriatrics, Psychiatry, Maternity, Med/Surg, anything that involves taking care of adults.

I don't see myself ever leaving pediatrics. I loathe adults.

Specializes in LTC, med/surg, hospice.
Specializes in critical care, ER,ICU, CVSURG, CCU.

i was going to do CCU! ER, CVICU, ICU & I DID VERY WELL

I was never going to work in mental health or LTC, but ended up enjoying both......

I have disdain for med/surg, - L&D, NICU.....and my hat is off to the nurses that are good in those areas

funny in 1966 I began working in physician office after school Sr. year high school, 3 &1/2yrs college, and 2yrs nursing school......I returned to a physicians office briefly in the 80s, and I am currently working in a rural family practice office near my farm, I have to admitt I always enjoyed office nursing. The hrs. are condussive for me probably working another 5-10 yrs....just for fun ;)

I wanted ICU, but I found out like most of my classmates, you work where you get hired.

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

In school I knew I would never do psych, although my clinical instructor was trying to convince me to consider psych. She said "You have such a nice smile Lev and you are so good with the patients." Ha! I've had enough psych patients out of the psych unit to know that I made the right choice for me.

I wanted to do ICU specifically cardiac. Still waiting for that job, but I'm making a couple stops along the way. Who knows, I may never end up there.

I knew I would never do OR because I felt the nurse barely did anything interesting in the 3 surgeries I watched. One was a cardiac bypass, one was an appendectomy, and one was a c-section. OR nurses may disagree.

I wanted to do L&D before nursing school, but in nursing school L&D was soo boring. I may consider it in the future. It seems like a nice job.

My senior practicum was in a recovery room, so that made me interested in that too. That's another specialty I would consider in the future when I want to settle down somewhere.

When I worked Med-Surg, I became friends with the vascular access nurses - they were awesome and always went out of their way to teach me all their cool techniques. Another thing I'd like to try one day. In the ER, I will learn how to put in central lines which will definitely help me enter vascular access if I'm interested. The ER will also help my IV skills get really really good.

Peds in school was so depressing...I said I would never do peds, but now I'm entertaining the idea of PICU once I get adult ICU experience. I want to be a well rounded nurse. NICU I don't think I could ever do.

Specializes in Medical Oncology, Alzheimer/dementia.

I never wanted to do psych nursing, and I doubt I ever will.

Another general surgery floor nurse. I loathe the idea of peds and NICU(too many parents around). ICU? Too many of their patients seem like medical experiments for certain doctors. Psych? Nope, not ever, those nurses have my total respect. LTC? Another breed of nurses who don't get the respect they deserve but I know it's not me

Emerg? Maybe a try in the next couple of years. I like to be busy.

Specializes in geriatrics.

Definitely anything involving newborns or pediatrics. You could not pay me any amount of money, as I have no interest.

I'm a geriatric nurse and I really enjoy working with the elderly.
