You would lose your pay for the previous day you worked.

Why would one lose pay, for a previous day's work, for calling out on a holiday?

Her unedited post gave more detail. Her previous day was the holiday. We have the same rule. Also with vacation. FTR, she asked for the day off and was denied and nobody would cover for her soooo not exactly subtle.
Bc it's at night, the holiday for night shift in my hospital is the night before, and my bday is the next day, I don't wanna be all day sleeping in my bday

Yes, for better or worse that is the life of many working adults. Sometimes working on birthdays. Or on kids' birthdays. Sometimes working on holidays (or the hours before/after a holiday). Many working adults choose to celebrate differently or celebrate the birthday/holiday on the closest weekend or another day that works. Just my opinion but calling off on holidays should be saved for significant sickness or personal/family catastrophe, in other words hopefully almost never/very rare. If you think about it, you probably wouldn't want to pick up work on a holiday you had off so that someone else didn't have to sleep part of the day on their birthday. You also probably wouldn't appreciate working short so that someone else didn't have to sleep part of the day on their birthday. So when it's your turn...🤷🏽♀️...just take your turn.

It depends on your employers policies but yes, it can cause problems. Many employers' won't pay the Holiday pay if you call out the day before, the day of or the day after the Holiday so at the very least you are likely going to lose out on any Holiday pay you might have otherwise received.
If you know well in advance you have plans that would make you not able to work, like being out of town for a Holiday you need to ask for the day off well in advance and there's no guarantee your request will be granted. If by chance you are lucky and it is approved you would still likely not get Holiday pay as most employers will not pay PTO and Holiday pay for the same day. If you request the PTO and it is denied, which is likely, do not then call out for the Holiday. Do what you have to do to make different plans and work as scheduled. If you call out after being denied PTO it's painfully obvious that you are not likely actually ill.

Where I work you call out on the major holidays you are not allowed to use PTO and don't get paid.
Already a young nurse where I work who has never worked Christmas in the three years she's worked there has said she's calling off since they had the nerve to schedule her since it was her turn to work Christmas Day. I understand how important holidays are to people but surely you all understand that hospitals are a 24 hour operation and you must work holidays. When you call off there is no one that is going to come in and you're screwing your coworkers. I'm working Christmas Day and already not looking forward to working short staffed.

You probably won't get fired for it but it definitely will cause you trouble. Find a holiday buddy. I had one that would work every Mother's Day for me if I would work every Super Bowl Sunday for her. I have also traded New Year's Day and Eve for Thanksgiving. And Christmas Eve for Christmas Day. I've never had to work Christmas Day or Mother's Day because of my trades.

Do you not get penal rates for working public holidays?
The running joke for us is that if someone calls off sick on a public holiday then they must be really sick.
We get double time, plus. day in lieu for a public holiday
I think your eemployers are screwing nurses
