Areas of nursing you would NOT like?

Published

When you were in nursing school were there any areas of nursing that you knew ahead of time that you did NOT want to get into. And did you have you mind set on one area?

What were those areas?

Specializes in NICU.

Geriatrics, LTC, Rehab, ortho....I enjoy high acuity settings.

Anything to do with the birthing process. The worst patients in my book are young women in pain. I couldn't deal with them on a daily basis, plus too much family dysfunction and too many sad stories like babies who aren't wanted by one or both of their parents. I did my OB rotation years ago in an urban hospital with lots of teen moms and an occasional crack baby. It was SO sad and depressing!

LOL, I think the worst are young MEN in pain, like 20-somethings who turn into toddlers when it comes to handling pain :)

Second to that....young women.....never could get used to those who kept a teddy bear in their bed, or something just as silly, for what should be a grown-up situation and far from life-threatening.

It's funny how what we thought we'd love and hate stay the same, and how they change.

I thought I would NEVER do med-surg, or at least avoid it like the plague, when I was in that clinical rotation in school. Turns out I not only started there, I REALLY liked it once I worked it!

I knew I never wanted to work psych, or L&D, and my opinions on that haven't changed...and I haven't worked there yet :)

Specializes in ICU.

Definitely psych and L&D. I just didn't have the right personality to deal with mental disorders and L&D was SO slow and boring. The only delivery that I witnessed, I was literally pushed into the room by my instructor and barely introduced myself to the mom, who was pushing at the time. But I will say that my L&D nurse when I delivered my baby last July was AMAZING so props to all you L&D and psych nurses! You guys truly rock!

Specializes in Behavioral Health.

I absolutely hated my L&D rotation. Went into the ICU straight out of school. Didnt work at the best hospital and I feared losing my license so I took the first job I could find, which happened to be L&D and I loved it! Funny how things work out.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

1. LTC, not for me.

2. Cardiac anything or Tele

3. ICU & OR don't seem appealing to me.

Specializes in Inpatient Oncology/Public Health.

Burn unit. I just could not do it. I remember learning about the treatments and compression garments, etc. And no Peds Onc. Adults only. I still see lots of young people die and it's very sad, but it's not babies and kids.

Onc clicked with me in nursing school and that's where I've been since(almost 8 years.)

Big middle aged men can be really bad too. I affectingly call them "man-babies."

The stuffed animals for grown women is weird but I work Onc so regression makes some sort of sense. Security, a safer time, etc.

I least liked my public health rotation, I felt so lame and ineffective. I ended up in a related field, home health, and love the teaching aspect. I think I could have been a great public nurse once I gained both life and professional experience. I would really like to be able to work with families re nutrition and preventive care. You know, try to keep them off your floor.í ½í¸‰

I was NEVER going to work ICU. Too scary, patients are too sick. Five years later spend five years working in there.

Specializes in Med/surg, Onc.

No LDRP for me, no kids or babies.

The flip side is I liked the burn unit, and I love my oncology floor and think eventually I'll consider hospice.

Proof that there is something out there for everyone !

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

I thought I'd do peds when I graduated, but during my peds rotation I learned that I can't handle it--the kids get to me too much.

In school, I swore I'd never do psych. Yet here I am and have been for the last several years, and pretty damn happy here too ;)

I also swore I'd never do LDRP. Nothing against LDRP nurses--you do a bang-up job....but better you than me. I have no patience for LDRP and their patients.
