When you were in nursing school were there any areas of nursing that you knew ahead of time that you did NOT want to get into. And did you have you mind set on one area?
What were those areas?

Thought I wanted Peds, but after having a child in resp distress-unnerved me too much. No ED, L&D or Psych. that was about my limit. I ended up in ortho and LOVE it.

No desk jobs for me. I had one of those, disliked it and headed to nursing school.
I have worked in ASCs and loved it! Now I am in the endo suite in a hospital. I love procedures! The work itself can be a bit monotonous, but I love that I take care of ten or more patients in a day. I could not stand having the same pt for 12 hours.....or days and days. I know some love that- but it is definitely not for me.

1. Anything SURGICAL
2. Pediatrics/women's health/maternity (it's not the kids; it's the parents. Adult family members are hard enough)
3. Oncology
4. Chronic dialysis/renal
5. GI, unless it's part of a critical illness
Things I don't mind that aren't popular: dementia care, LTC (if the ratios are OK and the facility isn't a pit, good luck with that), legitimate Axis I psych patients.

Have never wanted anything to do with peds or OB. Also thought no oncology or hospice but now think I wouldn't mind those as much. And no office job, at least until I'm facing retirement.
Otherwise, I've been able to imagine myself doing any other kind of nursing. Have really enjoyed ortho the past couple yrs but have second thoughts on ER.

Did my time with adults right out of the gate, spent 11months working in a SNF/LTC....never again!
Adults are way more needy and whinny than any of my Peds pts

I could never do Med/Surg, ER, OR, or LTC. The Med/Surg nurses all seemed unhappy and spent all their time pushing pills, ER was too fast-paced, and the nurse in the OR didn't do much when I was there. I had my heart set on Peds or L&D, and ended up triaging for a pedi office for two years before I became a school nurse. I just like the little people, and love being in the school!

Geriatrics, Psychiatry, Maternity, Med/Surg, anything that involves taking care of adults. I don't see myself ever leaving pediatrics. I loathe adults.

You & I must be twins! I knew before I entered nursing school I wanted nothing to do with adults. They are big, whiny babies!

Anything to do with the birthing process. The worst patients in my book are young women in pain. I couldn't deal with them on a daily basis, plus too much family dysfunction and too many sad stories like babies who aren't wanted by one or both of their parents. I did my OB rotation years ago in an urban hospital with lots of teen moms and an occasional crack baby. It was SO sad and depressing!

Areas I knew I would dislike:
1. critical care (patients are too acute)
2. L&D (general dislike of laboring moms)
3. postpartum (I feel uncomfortable around newborns)
4. pediatrics (I dislike children and adolescents)
5. med/surg (nurses ran around like headless chickens)
6. home health (patients with nasty homes who blow smoke in nurses' faces)
7. clinic/ambulatory care (I dislike Mon-Fri 9 to 5 gigs)
