Areas of nursing you would NOT like?

Published

When you were in nursing school were there any areas of nursing that you knew ahead of time that you did NOT want to get into. And did you have you mind set on one area?

What were those areas?

LTC, home health, mother/baby, and inpatient rehab are my nerves. Still haven't changed my mind on those.

Ltc. My 11 months were 11 too many. Anything involving ob, peds or full psych

I hated my OB rotation. So boring. Healthy mom's and babies doesn't involve much work.

Peds - can't deal with kids or kids families

OB - don't want anything to do with that whole process thank you

LTC - soooo depressing

Psych - not a good listener

Burns - just too awful and sad

Home health - could not tolerate going into other peoples homes.

I much prefer adult critical care, ER, OR or surgery.

I'm still pre-nursing, so I'm trying to keep an open mind, but I have certain areas that interest me more than others. I'm leaning heavily towards the ED. I've worked as an aide on med/surg, day surgery and ltc. I know that hospice/home health/ltc just aren't for me. I'm also really interested in community health and I'm considering (depending on how the next five years go) becoming an NP and working in low income areas to provide free/low cost care.

My future is pretty open. I'm going to try to dig this thread up in three years and see how much I've changed :)

I would live in a tent and go hungry before I would work L&D.

Don't want no kids, don't want no lady parts...got my own, thanks very much.

I never thought about it when in school because I didn't have a clinical in it, but LTC. May be the biggest NO my nursing career could ever shout.

Being in the ER and PACU, I have had the misfortune to see the products of life in the nursing home when they are sent for things like "altered x5 days". So so foul. All it has made me think Is "I hope whatever takes me or my parents is massive and quick". Slow deterioration has got to be the most unnerving thing I have ever seen.

Also, it's not PC to say, I just generally don't enjoy taking care of the elderly. Same as kids, and I have stated I don't want to take care of them, either.

When I was in nursing school, I thought L&D would be cool, but then I did my clinical there and just did not like the feel of the unit and just generally did not like it. My clinical day in peds was rough. I took care of a baby, probably 8-9 months old. He was my only patient for the day. I don't remember all of the particulars, but I do remember and I wanted to take him home. I would have a really hard time working with young peds to this day, I think.

I also thought OR would be cool. I just never had the right opportunity present itself to get in the door there. Haven't ruled it out yet.

I never wanted to work ER (can't remember why, maybe too chaotic and scary?), but I ended up as an ER nurse for 5 years.

I never considered school nursing to be anywhere on my radar, but I have been here for almost 4 years and I like it. I feel like (I hope at least) I have made a difference in some kids' lives.

I worked med-surg. I have great respect for med-surg nurses, but I could never go back there.
