Areas of nursing you would NOT like?

Published

When you were in nursing school were there any areas of nursing that you knew ahead of time that you did NOT want to get into. And did you have you mind set on one area?

What were those areas?

Specializes in Med-Surg.

Never wanted OR, L&D or pediatrics. OR doesn't fit my personality and I really enjoy my patient/nurse interactions, which you miss out on in that area. As a woman who has never been pregnant, L&D and pediatrics intimidate me too much. My stress level was way too high in the areas, mostly because I have no personal experience. I am extremely awkward around babies in particular. Med-surg is for me!

Specializes in Oncology; medical specialty website.

I knew that Hades would freeze over before I would ever work in L&D/Post-Partum. I think I would have been a WalMart greeter before doing that. My rotation in Maternity in nursing school was pure torture.

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

Back on the floor period. Not for me.

Specializes in geriatrics.

Lol OCNRN63! I have said the same about peds, L and D, NICU. Pure torture. I would bag groceries before accepting ANY positions in those areas. No interest, and no interest in learning about that population.

So for those of you who thrive in these areas, thank you! We need you.

Specializes in NICU.

I feel the same about geriatric specialties (I do have geriatric pts on my floor...but I'm talking like ALC/LTC and geriatric-focused areas)....NO THANK YOU!!!!!

Bless those who can!

Specializes in Pediatrics, High-Risk L&D, Antepartum, L.

This is hysterical. This is what is amazing about nursing...so much for everyone. I only ever wanted L&D or peds. If you put me in the OR or geriatrics...no. I would quit and join you at Walmart (and I hate Walmart lol).

Nursing is an amazing profession when you consider all of our options.

Not interested in theatre/OR or mental health. Although I love children, I would not want to work in Paeds, it would be too distressing.

My main interests are coronary care and ED, although with ED I do not see myself sticking around longer than 2 years, too much unplanned craziness.

Specializes in ICU, Geriatrics, Float Pool.

In nursing school I used to roll my eyes at all my classmates who wanted to do OB, it seemed so cliche to me. I wanted ICU - the adrenaline, the drama! Been there, tried it. I don't hate it, but I've lost my enthusiasm for it. My rose-colored glasses are off and now although I still think it's interesting, I'd give anything to be an OB nurse. I want to go in for once and see people who are happy to be there. Where 100% of your patients are not having the absolutely worst time of their lives. Too bad it's almost impossible to break into L&D. I'm doing Oncology (ironic) for a while, seeing if I can work my way across specialties to there somehow.

Specializes in Palliative, Onc, Med-Surg, Home Hospice.

I knew I would never want to work peds (parents drive me nuts), mom/baby or L&D. I worked med-surg/tele for a couple of years and as there were a lot of ortho patients, I found I dislike ortho.

I currently work onc/Palliative and I love it. If I leave onc I will more likely go to pulmonary. I take care of a lot of COPDers and I enjoy working with them.

Specializes in ICU / PCU / Telemetry / Oncology.

PSYCHIATRIC NURSING

I knew I would never go into that specialty. From the first day of class until the last, I disliked every minute. Ironically I got an A- in that course lol. But seriously, I know psych transcends every specialty to some degree, but I never wanted nor still want to work on a pure psych unit. It's definitely not for me. I enjoy working with IV pumps and wearing scrubs way too much :D

However, I'm still looking for my perfect niche ... :)

Oh btw, OB was never ever my thing either. It's too entrogen-charged for my taste, and as a male I feel stupid educating a woman about breastfeeding and other female things when I have never been one.

Specializes in Medicine.

An area I wouldn't want to work in is pediatrics. Not because I don't like kids ... I just would not want to deal with the parents

Specializes in Home Health; Hospice.

I'm chuckling reading any post that mentions labor and delivery, as the initials you all type in make a smiley face!
