Margaret Houlihan...and the nurse from China Beach....why can't they potray more nurses like that on TV?
My favorite tv nurse is definitely China Beach's McMurphy. The series coincided with my nursing school days, and was inspirational and helped me along when things got tough. Can't wait til this series comes out on dvd.:) My favorite movie nurse is from an obscure movie with Emma Thompson playing the nurse costarring with Jeff Goldblum in The Tall Guy. Love almost everything Emma has done.
Thanks for the interesting thread...

Kelly on MASH was one of my favorites. I'll never forget the episode when the young soldier was actively dying and hallucinating and she pretended to be his girlfriend... reminescing about a picnic at home... she called him "darling" within the next minute or so, he died. She played that part so well, after seeing it so many many times, I still cry.
Also the nurse in WIT... it touched me the way she could kick back and share a popsicle, talk about DNR options and fight so deligently for her patient after she had passed!!! A true inspiration for us all!!!
The nurses from MASH were exceptional... Kelly and Margaret..they worked well with the doctors and they didnt think that they were all stupid bimbos...that was the way that it was during that time...doctors had to depend on those nurses...
I also liked Carol on ER the first year or so...also like Abby and Sam and most of the rest of the nurses on that show...they have to pull the doctors *** out of the fire many times...
TV wants to show nurses with big boobs and short skirts and very little intelligence...the shows need to have a nurse as a technical assistant to help the nurses get the respect they need.
Unfortunately you have to go back a ways to find a good representation of nursing. According to most medical programs, you only need one or two nurses to run a hospital but lots of doctors.
I saw the best portrayal of a nurse is the China Beach nurse played by Dana Delaney (sorry if her name is misspelled). We sure could use another program like that. Any authors out there?
Gotta love Kitty Foreman. She's a hoot.
Julie London from Emergency! such a long time ago...
By far, all the nurses on MASH when they aren't shown covorting with Hawkeye in the "nurse is there for doctor's pleasure" situation. But Margaret and Kelly were real gems. I LOVE MASH. Those nurses were awesome.
Off topic: there's only one problem I have with MASH, especially the later ones. The Korean Conflict went on for 3 years on the early 50's. The later shows have the actors clad in decidedly 70's attire. Wish they would have stuck with clothes from the 50's.
That's so true! I agree...the nurses on soaps are a BIT unrealistic...but entertaining, nonetheless!! Funny how they always seem to have plenty of time on their hands, as well!!?? I guess that is SOAP OPERA MAGIC...the same magic that allows any children that are born on the show to age at an astonishingly quick rate!!
Don't you just love how they can leave the hospaital in the middle of the shift for any little thing. I still remember Gloria from All My Children managed to work in ER, pediatrics, the nursery and OR. You would think she would be pissed form the constant floating. My biggest wish is the soaps would learn how to place a nasal canula on someone and stop allowing the characters to talk while they are intubated.
