Who is your Favorite TV or Movie nurse?

Published

Television does not provide the proper respect due the profession.

Over the years their have been a few actors that have done justice to the role of nurse.

Who is your favorite TV or movie Nurse?

Yeah, I totally forgot about that show!! I used to love watching it. I know who you mean, she was great.

Dana DeLAney playing oh, it was an Irish name-MacMurphy, I think

The thing about china beach is that some of the stories about the nurses were based on experiences of real viet nam US nurses-mostly from a book called "A Piece of My Heart"-it was written right before that show came out-it's an awesome book. Some of it was sad stuff about young soldiers dying, etc; but also just simple stuff about how some of the nurses would wear lots of perfume and wear lipstick, because it reminded the guys of girlfriends and wives "back Home" and it also mentions the frustration of these nurses who were more like PA's or CRNP's to come back to the state and not even be allowed to give injections or start IV's....Oops, sorry I digressed. My Fav would be Margaret Houlihan, and then Dana Delaney Character

I forget her name, but the nurse from the old show China Beach.

sorry double posted somehow

Specializes in midwifery, NICU.
My vote would definitely be for Margaret Houlihan and other nurses of M.A.S.H. Like few T.V. shows depicting nurses, M.A.S.H. shows nurses who can triage, advocate for their patients, close for the surgeons, identify post-op complications, and think for themselves. They are not the physician's handmaidens but a respected part of the healthcare team. The same can not be said for any contemporary TV show I've seen except for ER.

All american shows. the British Saturday night show (BBC1), Casualty, (I guess like ER), has strong nurse characters.

Specializes in midwifery, NICU.

Anyone out there vote for the Casualty nurses, especially "Abs"?.( vvstrong mental health advocate, vvv nice mnurse)

I was hoping I'd see Dixie mentioned ... and sure enough. :-)

how about Nurse Dixie McCall from that old show about those two paramedics - I think it had "Emergency" in the title - she had the best starched white uniform ever!!! Colleen McMurphy from China Beach was way cool also.

OMG! I had forgot about Dixie-she was seriously startched, frosted, and blue-eye shadowed

Specializes in Cardiac Care.

Margaret Houlihan on MASH.

She was so...human.

Specializes in NICU.

Haleh, Chuny, Yosh and Malik are all fantastic.

And I think Abby started out at med school, and then when her ex stopped paying for it she "fell back" on nursing. I know she was in and out of med school a few times.

My absolute favorite TV nurse has got to be Laverne on Empty Nest.

OMG! I forgot about her. Have to agree with you! Sam on ER is my second choice. Love the way she came in on her first episode. :chuckle

Belize from Angels in America ... yes, it's a play, but it was on TV (HBO) ... so I guess it counts :chuckle .

Doctor: Nurses are supposed to be in white!

Belize: Doctors are supposed to be in bed in Westchester!

:rotfl:

And when she decked that guy who made his girlfriend sleep with his friends and then called her a slut...I wanna be Sam when I grow up!

Specializes in Med/Surg, Geriatrics.
IThe male nurse in "John Q" -also good, very professional and heartwarming.

That nurse was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable and he took time to teach the mother about her son's condition; just like a real nurse. :)
