Just a vent about nursing school

Published

I was not expecting nursing school to be so....boring. I've been working towards this for over 6 years, everyone is so excited for me and proud of me and wants to hear all the exciting stories about what I'm doing and....I really don't have any.

I loved anatomy and physiology and microbiology. I found those courses fascinating. I'm having a hard time getting into 20 techniques for taking temperature and 10 chapters about how patients exist within the context of family, society, and religion.

Anyway, I just wanted to put that out somewhere in the universe, because my family sure wouldn't want to hear it. If anyone is so inclined, it would be awesome to hear that it gets better.

i think it will get better for you, if this is what you're meant to do. for me, nursing was exciting from the very first day. maybe this isnt the career path you should be taking, who knows?

It does get better.

Right now, you're just getting the foundational stuff. I remember being tested on Benner's stages of proficiency and thinking... are they serious? They were, and I learned the hard way. But soon you'll get into pathophysiology and pharmacology and actual clinical experiences where you'll get to master some skills...

It really will get better. I promise.

Much luck and success to you!

It will get better. The first semester of my ADN program was a little dull. After that it got crazy hard and I didn't have time to think about boredom. :chuckle: Plus clinicals got real interesting when we were set free and expected to care for a pt on our own.

I hear ya. All this touchy-feely fundamental stuff isn't my favorite either. But it will get more interesting, trust me.

Specializes in Emergency/Cath Lab.

I thought that too until we are being presented with our torture of leadership segments in our senior year. Oh my god does it ever stop.

Pathopharm is deff my favorite class. Nursing fundamentals is deff my least.

It seems like all the guys like pathopharm and the girls dont. Weird.

Tell me about it- my two weeks in nursing school, we just worked on effective communication and hygiene. I was like " 'nurse' isn't code for 'shrink who wipes ass, is it?' " (well, it looks like it is, but that's not all there is to it). The big picture is beginning to come together now that we're doing nursing diagnoses and care plans and that's my "thing" so far - using your observation skills and knowledge to figure out the best ways to help this person out is one of the most satisfying experiences I've ever had, period. It looks like everybody has their pet subjects, so maybe you've just not found yours yet.

I think you will thoroughly enjoy Med/Surg. It's all the patho, A&P, etc. mixed with which of the 20 ways to take a temp won't kill the patient. I love it!

I get this. There is so much wank messed up with the important/interesting stuff. What gets me is how slowly the course work goes. The only skill we've covered (really) this semester is priming an IV line. & we spent over an hour learning to spike the bag and prime the line. ITS NOT THAT HARD, seriously. I want to bounce off the walls in frustration, sometimes.

Thanks- you all have been really reassuring. I was geared up for challenging, stressful and demanding and this has just caught me off guard a bit. We do Adult Health I, Women's Health and Mental Health next quarter, so hopefully that will be more interesting.

In the mean time, I'll put my big girl panties on, suck it up, and get as much out of it as I can.
