Hey, I know this has been posted countless times, but I still don't have an exact answer. I've tried contacting the BON with no luck.
I've been accepted to a couple absn programs out of state. They are accredited. They claim they have students come back to California with no issue. However, when looking at the requirements I see that California requires 18 clinical credits. These programs have 15-16.
so what's the answer? Does California actually require 18 for out of state schools? Is this program lying to me about people transferring back to California without issue?
im just really concerned about paying for these programs and being stuck there.
thank you

What are the programs?
I earned my ABSN at Johns Hopkins and had no issues getting licensed in CA.
There might be some confusion on credits versus units. Might need to clarify if these are the same thing.
Out of curiosity, I checked the Cal State LA ABSN program, which looks like it is 15 clinical units (they don't state the #, so I gleaned it as best I could from their curriculum). I don't think graduates of this program have any issue getting their CA license. You could call Cal State LA to get clarification on this. I also checked Cal State San Marcos ABSN and theirs says "Approximately 22 units of the program consist of clinical study"
Clinical credits is what I mean. I looked at the California schools and from what I could tell all their absn programs do include at least 18 units.
the programs I'm looking at are accredited.

You might want to compare the curriculums to see if there are clinical credits missing from the out of state programs that the CA programs. Do side by side comparison of the curriculums.
They look pretty similar. I've never really heard of people being rejected from licensure in California except from schools like excelsior so that eases my mind a bit.

Did you ever find out more if any of those schools are accepted in California, or any additional information about clinical requirements for CA?
No I didn't. There's no information on them and it's impossible to get answers. I've decided to just go for it.

A school that won't provide information on this is not a good sign. I have heard of CA BON not accepting graduates of some schools for licensure. Why don't you go to a school in CA if you want to work here?
Also, ask the schools if they have CA alumni and if so, ask to be put in touch with them. Then you can ask them if they had any issues.

I've only head of people being rejected after attending excelsior or schools of that nature. schools in california take years to get into. Why not go out of state for school that teaches the same thing, is accredited nationally, and ranked highly? I'm already accepted vs waiting around for a possibility in California.
The school won't put me in touch due to privacy.

There is nothing wrong with going to a school outside of California. Just make sure the CA BON will accept all classes.
A school that is unwilling or unable to provide confirmation that the CA BON will accept their classes is suspicious.
In addition, a school that is unwilling or unable to provide alumni references is also suspicious. As a thought, you might want to check LinkedIn and other similar sites, as well as social media, to see if you can connect with alumni that went on to get their license in CA and see if they had any issues.
Good luck

Did you get the answers you were looking for? I'm applying for ABSN at Idaho State and didn't know this was something that would be potentially problematic, now I am very concerned. Please share anything you learned!
