HELP: How Extensive Are Hiring Background Checks?

Published

So, I'm a Nursing Student and recently in addition to my waitressing job, I started doing like camgirl stuff online. Do you think I could be fired as a RN in the future? Or it could come up in a background check and hinder my employment majorly? I've made over $400 on the camming website so I'm required to file taxes eventually and I guess I'm just scared I could lose my RN license one day. I just don't want anything to jeopardize my dream but I also would like to be able to stay in school so I can reach it. I realize now I jumped into this head first before really thinking of the consequences, but now I need to decide to continue doing it or stopping.

I guess any general advice would be wonderful to ease (or fuel) my anxiety. Thank you!

How do you see that working?

I'm not sure but I remember seeing a similar post like this and it was taken down.

Still don't know what "camming" means - never heard that term before this thread

Sometimes a little ignorance is a lot of bliss!!! LOL! She is posing for an online camera is sexually explicit situations.

I've found a job where I talk to people on the phone, and in person...they can get a good look at me, but only with my clothes on (preferable for me AND them, I'd guess, lol). It's called nursing! :)

Just so people understand, there are sites where you can get any kind of info on anyone. Anything. So yes, if an employer wants to go that route, they can. Anything and everything. One of the sites, you pay a flat fee for unlimited info on absolutely anyone.

My advice to anyone, no matter what you are doing in life is to be very careful. Especially with the internet. I'm so glad I did all of my dumb crap before the internet. Even in my early twenties, the internet was not a huge deal yet. Dial up was a huge pain and I don't think camera phones were really out yet. People really need to understand the full extent of their actions.

Or there are other ways to do it. If it a message from a friend of mine who works in HR and does a lot of hiring (not in healthcare). She looked up an applicant on Facebook and saw that we were mutual friends and started asking questions about him.

I had only worked with the guy so I didn't know anything about his personal life but I could vouch for his professionalism and work ethic. People have ways of getting the information they want. OP, Don't be naive enough to think that people won't find out.

So as long as you make under $600, you do NOT need to claim your independent contractor job, as you will not receive a 1099 misc (I own a small co, so I do have experience with this). If you make more money and are issued a 1099misc, I assume that it will be linked with your SSN and if a background check is done, the name of the issuer of your 1099, your employer, will show up as a former employer.

I would just stop while you're ahead. Find another job that makes some side money. I know in nursing school, it's hard to balance work and school, but...plenty of people have done it and not involved "camming".

Those are not accurate, just so you know. I would never use one for anything I ever really needed.

There is no magical database that contains things like that. It is the biggest urban myth on the internet.

Sorry for disappearing I was trying to digest all the information. Thank you for answering, I really do appreciate all of your responses even if I disagree with some of your reasonings based on like personal pref. I guess I'm wondering how any employer could fire me if they found out about the job if it's in my past? Because it's the past and before I have my RN license! And sorry if I seemed to be answering some of your responses before that's how I think/work through information and make decisions. Thanks again.

Also, I see a lot of people asking why I did this and honestly camming boost my self-esteem, body image, and I have a very sex positive perspective where I do not think that camming or sex workers are "dirty" or do not respect themselves. It's a valid way of earning an income. That's completely okay if you do not share the same views as me, but I do not enjoy reading comments that are simply "what were you thinking" or "have some self-respect". Those are not constructive or helpful in the slightest. I have friends that do this and I thought for the summer it would be an easy way to make money in addition to summer courses and my other job.

I'm all for equal right for men & women & such. Ex: Women being able to sleep with men without being called a 'ho'.

But when it comes to camming & nursing, those two just don't mix. Do it all you want but if a future employer is able to pull it up & see what you did, I wouldn't. There are other ways to boost your self esteem & earn money. But it's your life. I have been fired & not hired for a lot less.

Where's your interest in nursing? Why don't you work as a nursing assistant in a nursing home and bring something positive to the lives of the elderly, or work in a group home for the developmentally disabled? That activity will go a lot further in helping you get accepted to nursing school instead of proudly boasting about how many times you performed for the "cam".

In employment at will states, the employer can get rid of you for any reason, or no reason at all. That would cover the situation when they find out about your past activities. As stated before, people have been fired or not hired for a lot less.

You're kidding, right? :roflmao:

I think you have unrealistic expectations of future employers. They sometimes have hundreds, if not thousands, of candidates for a position, and they use their personal values to screen candidates and weed out the unsuitable.

If you are applying for a non-profit, religion-affiliated hospital (which there are tons), and they find out, you will not be hired.

If you are applying in a conservative, religious area, you will not be hired.

You may get a verbal offer pending a background check, but they will rescind the offer once they find out.

As far as the background check goes, it usually depends on the facility. Larger companies do more extensive background checks in my experience.

A lot of them do FBI fingerprint checks, like they do for your RN license. Some have private companies on retainer that do full investigations based on your credit history, SS#, etc. Some that I have been screened by are exceptionally thorough, down to summer jobs I had in high school, while some just go off of credit history and last 5-10 years of employment (which is in your credit history, too).
