Mornin' all. I got my first dose today and I feel almost tearfully relieved and energized to be on this side of history. I thought I would start a thread dedicated to the experience of being vaccinated, so that we can share info with those who are still on the fence or who are watchful waiting to see how things go.
My hospital got 5000 doses delivered on Tuesday. We have given almost half of that already in the last two days. Participation is voluntary and divided into tiered groups based on patient exposure. Those who volunteer (still paid but outside normal job duties) to work the employee Covid vaccine clinic we have set up can also get it, which is how I was eligible to get it already today.
Getting the second dose is crucial for any protection, so we make an appointment to come back for the second dose on exactly day 21. We will get another shipment from Pfizer in time for that. My wait time in line was about 30 minutes in all. The first day employees showed up and waited over 2 hours, cheerfully. There is a LOT of positivity and hope going on here surrounding this, which feels amazing.
We go to an observation room for 10 minutes after the injection, where we were given bottled water and single serving snacks while we observe for any allergic reaction.
The injection itself was nothing. Easiest shot I have ever gotten by far. I don't even have any arm soreness so far. I will touch base if I start to get any kind of side effects.
Anyone else getting theirs yet?
13 hours ago, PsychNurse24 said:I did read an article that stated zero deaths had been confirmed from the Covid shot. So maybe that is where SummutRN got the info. I don’t think they can definitively say that the vaccine caused any deaths yet.
Not sure where I read or heard it but in CA no one died from the effects of the Covid vaccine. We need to remember that correlation does not equal causation."
Hppy
The Covid shot must be given in an environment where trained medical staff are nearby in case of an acute reaction. A friend of mine (a nurse) was working in the hospital two weeks ago as about 1700 (scheduled) shots were given. The recipients had stay an extra 15 minutes for observation (for possible adverse side effects). She said there was one person who had an anaphylactic reaction. Of course the crash cart was there and Epinephrine was given.
I doubt that the patient will be getting the second shot.
My Alaska family is all vaccinated...the 16 year old needs her second dose of Pfizer. We are all still being mindful that the 5 year old is not immune and is not yet eligible for vaccination. That means that we wear masks in public places and don't socialize closely with people who don't take mitigation seriously.
I got my second Pfizer dose a couple of weeks ago, just a couple of days before I had to make a trip to FL for an impending family death. I was certainly glad to have both doses, even if the second one hadn't had enough time to give me the maximum protection. I didn't have any bad effects following either dose.
J&J vax on Wednesday. Just 'real tired' that nite & went to bed rather early. Right arm just a 'pinch' feeling Wed & Thurs.
Feeling so much more psych comfortable having rec'd the vax. Hoping that increasing vaccinations will make the difference in this pandemic.
Taking that back - am praying. That and still 'mitigating'.
As of April 15, anyone in our state qualifies for a vaccine. So far, MIL, hubby, my 2 sons, and me are either done are started. Just have my daughter to go. But she has some weird mast cell disorder and prefers to be done at her providers office, where they know her. She often as anaphylactoid reactions, so is worried that some over-zealous HCP will jab her with epi when its not necessary.
Huge wait lists >2 months still in SE PA for healthcare and essential workers. 50,000 on wait list in my county alone. HOWEVER, state releasing increased vaccines to our area. Pharmacies now starting to administer vaccines -- appointments > 2-3 months out. Awaiting 2nd Moderna "Fauci ouchie" 4/20.
PA stated all pharmacies giving COVID vaccines need to permit future appointments, Bullied my adult sons today to attempt getting appointment. Latest PA rollout info:
Had my #2 Moderna day before yesterday. Stopped all my anti inflammatory stuff for really rotten arthritis as recommended four days before and had some miserable days before hobbling in to the mass vax site at the stadium.
Spent yesterday c sore throat and overwhelming fatigue but no fever since I restarted my industrial strength acetaminophen/naproxen/etc not much of a fever. Today not only do I feel a lot better, had a day on the mattress + meds and my knees are feeling (comparatively) great.
In two weeks we can go to a tenth birthday party! Eight weeks to my TKR!

Millions of shots given. Many states initially targeted those 65 and older, that population group has been known to die from natural causes.
