Hello,
So I accidentally fell asleep during OB clinical. The nurse reported me to the director and I met with my professors and they gave me a 30 minute lecture and I said I was sorry which I truly am sorry. I have no excuse for my actions and I really am so stupid for doing this and am a true embarrassment to my program. I promised this would not happen again and I have to meet with the director tomorrow. What can I expect out of this? Will I get kicked off the program? Also, I have an internship with this hospital in a different unit a medical surgical unit. Will I get kicked off of this internship?
Thanks guys I appreciate the feed back.

You can expect to get written up but I doubt you would get kicked out. The only way to get kicked out of my program is if you are negligent with your patient, come to class high or hungover or repeatedly fail to do assignments. However, each nursing program is different.
Thanks so much for the comment. Also, do you think that the internship will be in any danger
Thanks!!

Well falling asleep on a nursing job is generally a firable offense. Heck back in my CNA days, when I started doubling into noc's, one of the experienced CNAs told me don't ever fall asleep, as I would probably get fired. Sleeping on the job IS negligent...granted in this case you're not ultimately responsible for the pt, but at the same time you're expected to put your best foot forward as a student-guest.
It does sound like you're sorry and understand you messed up. I do hope they show mercy and you don't cause them to regret it.
Do you know what led to the falling asleep? I think it would be wise to see your provider, find out about getting a sleep study done to find out what's going on when you sleep at night, rule out something like narcolepsy. If there is something physiologically wrong, you need to know.
Good luck!

Nobody here can say what will come of this. From reading on this site about various situations, some people get slammed for an offense while others don't even get noticed for doing the same thing. It all depends. Hopefully, you are allowed to recover from this transgression and can move on to graduate. Best wishes.

How did it come about that you fell asleep? Did you feel so bored that you fell asleep? I am just trying to understand what the cause was.

It is beyond anyone's magical powers here to know what will happen. You probably are not the first one to fall asleep at clinicals, especially with people doubling up like working then going to clinical or switching shifts like night shifter doing a day shift clinical.

I suppose it'll depend on the powers that be in your program.
We we had a student fall asleep in clinicals when I was in school. Student pulled up a recliner next to patient's bed and was snoozing away...until the floor charge nurse walked in. Had said student been found by the clinical instructor it may have panned out differently but the student was failed for that clinical/lecture and ended up dropping out of the program.

I remember in my second semester that there was a student who fell asleep in lab one day and then a couple weeks later fell asleep in clinical, she was kicked out after that.

There was one kid I knew in tutoring who got accepted into the program. He was accepted in the Fall and by end of Fall, he was kicked out. His story was pretty hard to read but he said something about violating HIPPA during clinical.

How do you "accidentally" fall asleep?

I can see getting a major antidote for it but I wouldn't think they would kick you out. Hopefully they won't and hopefully that has made your paranoid enough to not do that again! Wish you the best of luck!
