anybody move to TX and regret it?

I dont mean to sound negative but did anybody move to TX because of more job opportunities and having difficulty with finding jobs or becuase of different regulations or whatever reasons regret moving to TX?

I was contemplating a move to another state during one of those long terms of unemployment and I was advised by a friend living in that state to change my address, driver's license, car license plates, anything else identifying me with the state I would have been migrating from because he said there is a deep animosity there for people coming from my state. Apparently absorbing the unemployed is not a strong point in that particular neck of the woods.

I have a friend who moved from Seattle to Houston and preferred Houston. I'm really curious how anyone can prefer Houston (not the best scenery, too hot to go outside 6 months out of the year, horrible highways) to Seattle? I agree we have a great med center and good cost of living.. (okay, NASA pretty cool too).. I donno.. my heart just isn't here (enough though it's been "home" almost as long as I can remember).

since my family is still in Texas, I kind of had no choice.. so I learned to deal with it..

Seattle was so far away from all of my family that Houston was a good choice.. i found San Antonio slower than Houston and preferred Houston- ended up going to school there, and getting married.. I think about going back but its so far away..

I too was born and raised in the Dallas area, and hate it here. I HATE the weather, people honk at you as if your stupid, and the culture is very different. I have friends from other states, and often visit them....as far as cultural diversity IMO, Texas has a mighty LONG way to go. Once I get some experience under my belt, I am also heading out of Texas for good. I may be a Texan by birth, but I sure will not stay here for good. Alaska does sound nice also....but I was also thinking Minnesota or Wyoming or Idaho....:)

I am a long term DFW resident. I truly hope to get out of here once I graduate and my kids are off to college. It isn't a BAD place to live, but the values here do not reflect my own and it is just too stinkin' HOT in the summer. I would prefer to live somewhere with four seasons instead of just two and somewhere that has more contour to the land.

That being said, there tends to be more economic opportunity here than in a lot of other places on the whole when looked at over time. But right now unemployment is near 10% just like most everywhere else.

LOL - How can anyone who has only lived in the Dallas area make any type of objective statement about Texas as a whole??? That's the beauty of Tx - there are so many very different areas/regions. It is probably hard for a Dallas-ite to imagine the cultural diversity of Houston. We have the (geographically) largest "Chinatown" in the USA - even the street signs are in Chinese. We have a larger professional theater (in terms of capacity) than Chicago. We are home to the largest population of Nigerian immigrants in the US - largely due to the petrochemical connection. My neighborhood has a very large Korean population. Our soccer team (Yea Dynamos!!!) has an enormous fan base due to our very large South American population. You really want diverse???? Our very popular newly-elected mayor is an lesbian, and that issue didn't even raise eyebrows during her campaign.

I have lived in 12 other states, and all regions of Texas at one time or another so I definitely have a basis of comparison. Despite fire ants, uninspiring landscape, monsoon rains, jungle heat, ferocious traffic and the periodic opportunity to see my house travel 50 miles an hour in a hurricane..... I don't want to live any where else.

Former left coaster here (always lived in cali and wash and oregon)

Moved to Az for 4 years, and Fort Worth for 6+ for my husbands job.

LOVE it! The people are awesome. So friendly and so fun.

Fort Worth is like a whole different country than Dallas!

These are the very things I hate, hate, hate about Houston. I agree we have lots of cultural diversity which I love, it's nice being associated with NASA, and the cost of living rocks... but for me.. the stuff I bolded (and underlined and italicized lol) tip the scale in the negative direction.

I moved here young but I still remember the beauty of upstate NY.. I want to live somewhere beautiful again. :)

I agree with you. I have lived in much better places and can't wait to leave- I hate Houston. It is great that we all have different tastes, otherwise we would all be living in the same spot!! I forgot who said this quote or if I remember it correctly "One mans hell is another mans paradise" AMEN!!!:yeah:

you have to look at these posts are from people who moved from liberal CA to conservative TX! Don't just look at the jobs that are available - you have to look at your own personal value system and determine if it fits with the local culture. i live in IA and miss the true conservatism of TX. You also have to look at the culture of the facility you are going to work for - the difference between Keizer-P and Houston medical are astounding!

I am originally from CA and I am VERY conservative, that being said there are A LOT of things wrong with TX. Starting with the workforce laws that do NOT protect employees. In Texas employers are NOT required to have workmens comp which should be a basic requirement, the wages that are paid to waitreses is just embarrassing, I feel so bad for these people. Also the weather here is AWFUL and I could go on and on. On the other hand there are good things in TX as well, the cost of living makes it tolerable to live here.

I love the schools my children attend and the large spaces LOL! I also feel blessed to not be in a state that is now teaching Gay rights to my children as I think this should be my choice as their parent, because of this I would NEVER move back to CA.

I dont think anyone is knocking TX because they come from liberal CA, I do not have a liberal mentality but I am also not ok with many things that happen in TX. I have encountered a lot more racism here as well. That is my personal observation and experience though.

I am hoping to move to northern Texas in Jan of this year, and I can hardly wait!!! I have spent lots of time in Texas, so I am pretty sure I know what I am getting into. I ride horses, and Texas is the HORSE CAPITAL. I am super excited about being able to ride year round, and I would die happy if I never saw another snowflake again!! I am just hoping that I can find an ICU job and a little land for my horses.

I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of North Texas and it certainly snows here, although not as severely as in the Northern and Midwestern states. We received about a foot of snow back in February.
