    Help...need AWAY from bedside but don't know where to go...

    Have you considered working for your state agency .. working as a nurse surveyor .. Some of the state agencies do not require a BSN...pay is below what you will make in a hospital.., but it is a day job without holidays and week-ends.. the benefits are good.. some of these nurses work with acute care hospitals, others work with nursing homes, and home health. You need to decide what is your interest. Good luck!

    I am working on a PhD and also interested in this topic. I would talk to a nurse that has a PhD outside of nursing to fulfill your request. TiffyRN gave you some good suggestions. You can also review articles related to the topic and contact the author about their results. Hope that helps!

    have you appealed to the local board within the time frame? Its a game.. you have so many days to response if you do not like the outcome... Appealing to VACO is a waste of time.. they seem to always go along with the local station.. but good luck.. write to the standards and show outcomes with percentages etc...

    Who do you answer too? the Nurse Executive or the physician you work with?

    Write to the standards and how you have improved the project etc.

    If you write to VACO, many times they side with the local station..

    Several people have posted proficiency's on this site.. follow the chain back and see if you can find them..

    I do not have a proficiency to share, but give examples for the areas of practice, research, quality etc, address the outcome for every goal you stated you have accomplished. Some VA's will not promote to nurse III without a MSN.. the VA is very education driven. There are 150 hospitals through the country I suggest you move around, that is the best way to move up in the organization.. Just speaking from experience, especially if your goal is to become a nurse executive or chief nurse.. Also sign up for any leadership classes the VA maybe offering. .. The use to have many but these days who knows.. Good Luck!! Adding questions from a KASO I used to apply for several jobs at the VA.. «KSA02» Knowledge of, and the ability to interpret and apply, laws and regulations, and policies (including those of accrediting bodies) in order to ensure compliance As the compliance nurse for research I have the knowledge and ability to interpret regulations and policy from the Federal Drug Administration, (FDA), Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Research and Development Committee. This was accomplished by the following task: Prior to auditing I created a procedure manual for creating and maintaining research records, and this has enhanced the audit process tremendously, because all the records are consistent. I researched and collaborated with other research services within the .......attended workshops to assist me in finding the correct tool to audit research protocol here at the ,,, VAMC . I created a detailed web based research 101 course to assist those in research at the ..., with the interpretation of regulations, laws and policies to ensure compliance. I also developed a classroom version of the web based research 101 course for research staff. I audit research protocols to ensure regulations are followed and assist the coordinators in interpreting those regulations and laws. As a result of these audits, documentation of the consent process has increased by 98%. I am also am member of the IRB for the.... as well as a former member of .... IRB. As a member of that board, my role is to review clinical research protocols and all research activities that may occur. This includes institutional regulations, laws, standards or professional conduct and practice. Protocols have been tabled if patient safety issues arise, and I recommended that in cases where the research was not clearly defined. In my role as Nurse Manager for Surgical Intensive Care (SICU), clinical knowledge as well as knowledge of VA policy and procedure was essential to ensure effective leadership of the unit, and supporting the staff in the day to day activities of the SICU. This is critical when reviewing schedules to staff a busy SICU for 24 hour coverage.     I want to do some consulting, but with a PhD I will be able to do many things, anyway that is what I am hoping. I am writing a dissertation on nurse bullying and I want to present the results of this research to others. We will see what that brings.. Thanks so much for asking. I also believe I will be able to teach as well.

    The research portion could be addressed by assisting with research in your unit. VA has all kinds of research going and researchers and coordinators coming to your unit, recruiting patients etc. Figure out what you could do to assist them.

    Get a copy of the Nurse Professional Standards. That is what is use to board you and promote you to the next level. If you are a nurse II, address the standards to a nurses III you will be promoted... If not just about getting a MSN, it was changed to a one time monetary incentive. The board wants to see you doing something hospital wide to impact patient care etc.. Good luck!

    there is a shortage of primary care physicians, so I think you will be ok .. Look at Saybrook University.. I am working on a PhD in Mind & Body Medicine, with an emphasis in Health Systems.. check it out.

    PhD program with Saybrook University

    I am currently enrolled in a PhD program with Saybrook University .. its 100% online. My PhD is in Mind and Body medicine with a concentration on Health System.. most clinicians enroll in the health practice track, but I selected health systems instead there is also an research track as well.. It is expensive but I have learned so much about alternative therapies, health and wellness which I love. check it out..

    The sample design is usually discussed in the methodology section of the article. Go to google scholar and pull up the FULL article, so you can review it .. if you can't find it there go to your school library online and look for the article.
  15. Bullying in nursing is definitely an issue. I am currently writing a dissertation on workplace bullying of nurses. The literature states that many nurses do not recognize it until it happens to them or witness it...I don't have the name of the article, right now,..but will be happy to submit it later if anyone requests to see it. We have lost our civility toward others, and it is becoming more common in the workplace and society. The recent presidential election has validated that! So don't discount the idea, bullying does occur frequently ...even if you are not looking for it..Those in management are the worse prepretators because it is used to punish & isolate others, & It becomes part of the organizational culture.. and promotes silence.
