Why did you come to allnurses? What made you stay?

Published

There is a current thread entitled Things that annoy me on allnurses. Members have been pretty vocal on that thread. We really are interested in your feedback. You are why we are here. You are what has helped to make the site what it is today.

We are always striving to find out more about our membership.......who you are, how you got here, why you stayed, what you want, what you like. We want to provide features and opportunities that are of interest to you. With such a large membership, we know we can't please everyone all the time But we want to provide a place that has something for most of you....and that takes a lot of different types of things.

We hope that even though you may not like some of the things we offer, some of the new things we have tried or will be trying, you will be supportive. Let us know what you like and what you don't like. But please be respectful in your communications.

To help us as we consider things in the future, please take a few minutes to answer a few questions.

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

2. Why did you stay at allnurses?

3. How long have you been a member?

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features etc

5. What would you like for us to change or add to allnurses?

We want to continue to be the voice of the nurses as we all strive to raise the level of our profession. We thank you for your input!

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

I found it while searching for something nursing-related my final semester of nursing school. I stayed up half the night on AN that night! I woke up with sore eyeballs.

2. Why did you stay at all nurses?

It's wonderful to be a part of such a diverse, intelligent group of fellow nurses and to constantly learn new things from each other. No one else understands what it's like, day in and day out.

3. How long have you been a member?

Since spring of 2008

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features etc.

I enjoy the fora related to my specialty, as well as the general discussions where I get to interact with everyone. I used to like when the top threads were posted right on the front page in a list, it hasn't been like that in a few years. The Breakroom is cool too, although posters on extreme ends of the political spectrum can get my blood boiling, so I've only posted there a few times.

5. What would you like for us to change or add to all nurses?

I would like for there to be stricter editing of the "professional" articles posted here. It would also be nice if, as others have suggested, a poster couldn't start their own thread until they've reached a certain number of posts. The spam and trolls lately are out of control, but I know you guys work really hard to get rid of them.

Also, the multiple threads started in the last few days by a certain Kiwi nurse have to be setting some kind of new record for craziness. AN is nothing if not entertaining!

1. Because I was accepted into a local nursing program and wanted to see what message boards were around to talk about nursing school. This is the first one that popped up.

2. I tended to find some pretty good advice here and really no reason to leave it.

3. Since April or May of 2012.

4. All of the specific boards make it pretty simple to find what specialty I'm looking for. I also like the weekly emails.

5. My one gripe: I see that I have a private message every time I stop in, but since I don't have the required number of posts to use the system I can't even check the message. I'm sorry, but that just seems silly to me. I like to lurk and generally don't post much, and I'm not going to post random things just to see what a message says.

Siri rocks, although I feel like I am giving her gray hair and heart attacks. Her gentle "chiding" PMs and reminders to calm the **** down (not in those words, of course) are precious. I really like her and feel like a toddler when I upset her.

Okay, yes. I am quoting myself because I am an idiot. I was referring to sirl the Mod, not Siri!!!

And you dingbats under there all liking my post!

sirl the mod ROCKS, bla bla bla...

Where's MY BAG?

:bag:

We knew who you meant, silly.

Well, duh. (Referring to sirl, not the idiot part - really!)

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

Joined way back in 2001 when I was looking at moving to the US and was trying to find out how to study for NCLEX

2. Why did you stay at allnurses?

Became addictive................................ allnurses anonymous how can you help me :)

3. How long have you been a member?

since 2001

Been moderating for a long time and enjoy seeing the good and bad in people and love how everyone is able to offer advice whether good or bad and that the advice is generally coming from people who live in the same shoes and regardless of country face same or very similar issues

I came across AllNurses as a pre-pre-nursing student with a newly minted English degree, working as a pension analyst and searching for information about becoming a nurse. That was almost exactly five years ago (July 2010).

I stayed at AllNurses because I recognized early that I could glean some real-world information here--about being a nursing student and a practicing nurse. Now that I've started my final semester of nursing school, I see what a valuable resource we all have in this forum. I particularly appreciate the wisdom of the "Crusty Old Bats."

Hey, I'm an almost-new grad. I NEED their perspective

What I enjoy about this forum is the wide variety of topics, opinions, and responses.

Things to change: If we could magically screen out troll posts and text speak, that'd be awesome

I like that we can be anonymous. My real name is nothing close to Allie.

I like that they have Terms of Service and also that the TOS are enforced. Also, I believe the TOS are appropriate.

I like that it is user-friendly. I use my laptop, not a smart device, to access AllNurses and I feel the interface is pretty slick. It's very easy to start a new thread, for example.

I've had nothing but positive experiences with the Admin people. I find them very helpful and very prompt.

I like the Search feature. Generally, if I search something, relevant things show up for me to investigate.

One thing I really, really like is that you can get e-mail updates when others post in forums you're following PLUS you can control how often you receive this updates. Instantaneously was a bit much for me but I like daily...so I'm trying that for now.

There are other things I like. I can't think of them right now. I'll post again if they come back into my brain :) .

Allie

Well it was kind of haphazard. I was trying to find clipart for a project and was directed to your site. Now I realize that it's a great site with a lot of resources for nurses. A real virtual community for nurses. Really great!

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

Because the first taste was free.

2. Why did you stay at allnurses?

I'm now addicted (see above). That & all y'all get me. I can talk nurse stuff to folks who know exactly what I'm talking about and why I feel the way I do. Plus I get to laugh a lot.

3. How long have you been a member?

Over 9 years.

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features etc

Mobile app, "like" option, the drama.

5. What would you like for us to change or add to allnurses?

At least 5 posts before being able to start a thread.

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

I first came to allnurses when looking for a supportive online environment when I was a new graduate nurse in 2007.

2. Why did you stay at allnurses?

I stayed because I enjoyed the community, received great advice, and loved being able to touch base with and get opinions from other nurses who I didn't know through my workplace. The relative anonymity is great too.

3. How long have you been a member?

Since 2007 I think.

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features etc

I enjoy the humor threads, education, and career categories. I also really like sharing my own experiences with nurses who have less experience than I do. But I also really enjoy the fact that we have a place where nurses from all walks of life, of all backgrounds, educations, and experiences can come together to share their wisdom, advice, and stories.

5. What would you like for us to change or add to allnurses?

I haven't been coming on here as often because I find that the community has generally gotten more bitter than it seemed to be when I was coming here more regularly. I loved coming on here initially because I found that the vast majority of the members were very understanding, gentle, professional, and respectful even if OP's were clueless and perhaps a bit rude. I also found that the admin was a lot quicker to remind members of terms of service about being courteous (or deleting unacceptable posts) than they seem to be now. Lately it seems like a lot of the threads I've visited have had some very nasty and downright mean posts in them escalating to all-out flame wars. I know many of us don't suffer fools gladly, but if I were a new grad discovering this site now I wouldn't be as inclined to join as I was when I first found it.

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

Not sure exactly how I found the site, but, I came here as a student nurse looking for test taking tips. I was one of those people that had not discovered the search function yet. :bag:

2. Why did you stay at allnurses?

I stayed because I received valuable feedback on a few of my posts that I actually utilized and that actually helped. I mostly used my account to read other posts and eventually started posting myself...once I felt comfortable.

3. How long have you been a member?

Almost 3 years.

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features etc

The sense of humor of a lot of posters. I always get a good laugh! I also learn a lot from other posters which is always a plus.

5. What would you like for us to change or add to allnurses?

To be able to edit posts at a later time would be nice.
