Why did you come to allnurses? What made you stay?

There is a current thread entitled Things that annoy me on allnurses. Members have been pretty vocal on that thread. We really are interested in your feedback. You are why we are here. You are what has helped to make the site what it is today.

We are always striving to find out more about our membership.......who you are, how you got here, why you stayed, what you want, what you like. We want to provide features and opportunities that are of interest to you. With such a large membership, we know we can't please everyone all the time But we want to provide a place that has something for most of you....and that takes a lot of different types of things.

We hope that even though you may not like some of the things we offer, some of the new things we have tried or will be trying, you will be supportive. Let us know what you like and what you don't like. But please be respectful in your communications.

To help us as we consider things in the future, please take a few minutes to answer a few questions.

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

2. Why did you stay at allnurses?

3. How long have you been a member?

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features etc

5. What would you like for us to change or add to allnurses?

We want to continue to be the voice of the nurses as we all strive to raise the level of our profession. We thank you for your input!

I've been on AN since March 2001. Made some great friends here, my current UserName is NOT my original one. I change it up from time to time due to how a former coworker turned me in to management at a former job for something I'd posted here. I'm still friends with a LOT of people I've 'met' here...we started our own spin-off message board and now have a private FB group. I did meet one nurse that I met here in real life in "08 at NTI-Chicago. I'm really good friends with one fellow-RN from here...we used to meet in the chat-room late at night as we'd all worked 2nd shift then....Even talked with THE Brian then....and met him at that NTI plus a few other Admins at the An booth. I pop in every now and then...to get info...to see what's goin on....with the advent of FaceBook, I'm not here as much as I used to be....gotta be careful because BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING!!

There's a chat room?

There was a chat room on AN - many years ago when we used a different platform.

Specializes in Psychiatric/Mental Health.

I probably found allnurses after a google search.

I have been lurking for several years and just recently made an account.

I stay because I work on a unit where I am often the only nurse, so the internet has been my main source of education and advice (not ieal, but it is what it is!). When I have a question or concern, I do not have a nurse with 20 yrs experience sitting at the desk next to me, so I come here.

I enjoy the support and knowledge from colleagues who have so much experience that they are willing to share. There are several really active members on the psych forum that I have already learned so much from.

I dislike the general layout of the site and think it is sometimes hard to navigate.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

To find out more about nursing school.

2. Why did you stay at allnurses?

To deal with nursing school and then with being a nurse. Then I got offered a moderating position and said yes, so now I "work" here too ;)

3. How long have you been a member?

Circa 2007.

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features etc

The wide audience we attract, the specialty and state forums, the resources others have to share.

5. What would you like for us to change or add to allnurses?

I did like the state forums because it made it easy to find information and others that were local to me. A chat room/feature would be nice too.

I honestly don't remember why I came to Allnurses. Looking at my join date, I was in my BSN program, probably doing an Internet search on AltaVista for a school project.

I stay for the social interaction; as Viva said, my family doesn't get nursing. Also, I love politics and I don't discuss that at work.

I have been a member since 2002.

I enjoy the humorous posts, anything about COBs, and of course politics. There are several posters that I look forward to reading, including those that I disagree with. I have learned so much.

I do miss the chat room.

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

I originally came to get help and support with school but stayed so I can help others. I also like that you can get information on how things are done in other regions of the country. It is always amazing that you can get a perspective from so many people that work in different areas, all the way from students to administrators.

2. Why did you stay at all nurses?

See #1.

3. How long have you been a member?

I think since 2012.

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features, etc.

I like the fellowship with other nurses in other areas and that so many are willing to help. I like the fact that it is broken down into different specialties, students, etc.

5. What would you like us to change at allnurses?

This board used to be far more active than it is now. I am not saying this to be unkind on any level and I won't mention anyone in particular, but message boards need to be moderated, that is a given. However, I do not think that this board has always been moderated fairly. It seems like some members were allowed to bash anyone they wanted and if someone else said anything even close to being negative their post was removed or sanctioned. I truly believe that this is why many members are no longer posting. It doesn't take you long to figure out who is friends with who and it often was reflected in the moderation.

I liked this message board far better with the old format. This one is not very user friendly. These are the features that I miss:

1. Being able to message a member right off one of their posts.

2. Being able to see a members former posts by any post on the board.

3. The search features are difficult and it is hard to pull up something specific. It seems like I could really narrow my search before. Now, I rarely use it because it's too general or pulls up posts years old.

4. THE BIGGEST: The "What is new" feed showing up on the main page. This is what most of us go to first, yet you have to click several things to find it.

This is my favorite place on the entire internet!

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

I was in undergrad, interested in nursing.

2. Why did you stay at allnurses?

- The community. Made friends online and in real life through nursing school.

- The advice. The candid, no sugar added advice. I've learned so much from other members who answered me and by reading other people's issues.

3. How long have you been a member?

I think 2006? Can't figure out how to look on the app.

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features etc

The specialized boards, but I wish the areas specific to me (cardiac and ICU) had more activity.

5. What would you like for us to change or add to allnurses?

- I use the search a lot. Can a date range be added so I'm not finding super old topics?

- How about an "interesting articles" or "evidence based changes" area? (Or is there one and I didn't know yet??)

- CCRN and/or other

certification prep board?

- I hate to rain on new member parade but I really wish there was a way to better moderate their activity. I like reading the newest posts but it's a chore to sift through the posts by new members asking the same exact thing after the next. Maybe have to be a member for long before posting? I don't know exactly what to suggest - not my area of expertise. But I will say I wish AN had more quality posts and less quantity of posts more often than not.

That's all I can think of for now, I'm overall a satisfied member.

Thank you for asking for feedback!!

I came to pick the brains of other nurses in my specialty.

I stayed because I can't stop reading the dramatic train-wreck posts.

But in all seriousness, in answer to question #5, I find the "dashboard" and alerts system not very useful. I wish it could be changed so that I can see alerts separately for how many have liked my comments, vs. if anyone has quoted/responded to me vs. the random announcements. The dashboard just doesnt seem very well thought out as far as letting me actually see whats been going on with the posts I am interested in. I also have trouble at times with the private message system....I will try to reply to a message and instead it wants me to write a new message and type in the name of the member I am sending it to. Why can't it just automatically fill in the To: field since I hit reply to an already existing message?

Minor annoyances. All in all I spend way too much time on this site because its just interesting reading :)

1. Why did you come to allnurses?

Someone at work told me about it. She hasn't been around here in years though.

2. Why did you stay at allnurses?

It's fun and informative and I've become friends with many nurses on here. I've met two in person.

3. How long have you been a member?

Since December 2002.

4. What do you enjoy the most about allnurses? Features etc

The Break Room.

5. What would you like for us to change or add to allnurses?

I can't think of anything because it has regularly changed just about yearly over the years. For the better each time with some minor glitches that were easily fixed. The chat room was fun but seems a bit dated now.
