Status

Published

How we seek status. Get the LPN so that you're better than the CNA, get the CNA so that you're better than the housekeeper. Get the RN so that you're better than the LPN, CNA or houskeeper. Get the BSN so that you're better than the ADN, and get the MSN so that you're better than just the ordinary BSN. But lots of people have MSNs so leave nursing altogether and become an NP And then go for the PhD, but don't stop there! One really needs to also be a fellow of the american academy of nurses and have a national certification. But then you're going to need a job to go with all that, so go work for the government or get on some editorial board of some nursing journal, or scrounge for research dollars at a university. Whatever you do--make the big bucks, because that's how you really prove you're better than just a bedside caregiver.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about power and status--I just want the real thing. I want the power and status Mother Teresa had.

No.

By myself

This is the thesis of my post. I think people that talk about how corrupt money and power are, are afraid to fail in reaching it.

I've gone to nursing school and been on this board for 4 years. That's what I'm doing posting on a nursing BB.

Now..........what do you think of prestige as a product of commitment? It could simply be coincidental.

I think you should go for all the prestige you can get. You can have my share, too. You may not find as much prestige as a PA as you think, however. It's kind of like an E-9 getting promoted to 2nd Lt. If you have never been in the military, you may not understand that analogy. But you might find you go from getting a lot of respect to fetching coffee but getting paid more. And by fetching coffee I mean doing all the routine rounds the MDs don't want to do.

But that's your choice. As for money and failing to reach for it: Everyone fails, because no one has as much as they want.

Good point on the reverse snobbery issue. In fact, I agree. And it may be the case that I was not actually called by God to be a nurse, but given the signs that have followed that calling; I have no choice but to believe it. I may be completely deluded, but I'm incapable of seeing it any other way.

But how is that snobbery? God called you to it as well--it just doesn't seem to have done anything for you spiritually. And if that is the case, if I were you, I'd be scared of that and be looking for path to spiritual growth. Man, we didn't just come into this world to eat, digest, sleep and poop in the morning. We are vessels for God, or we are supposed to be.

I'm getting more bold, now, because school is starting back up in the AM and I don't know how much I'll get back to the group over the next week.

It's snobbery because it is about "I am better because I believe God called me to nursing". It is not about nursing. It's about ego. It's how you get prestige and put down others (and that's snobbery). True spiritual growth does not need an audience.

I love my job, but it is not my life and I don't feel bad when I say that. If it is your whole life, I would be sad for you.

ADNRN "wannabe" (your NOT a nurse so why do you use that title???)

Anyhoo:rolleyes:......With your present day attitude about nurses and nursing, even Mother Theresa would have scolded you. :( Of all people, don't compare yourself to her. She exuded what most people couldn't begin to exude from themselves. She had heart, determination, a spirit of caring and compassion for those who truly needed her kind of spunk and spirit for living........the list is endless. Using her name the way you do only proves you are trying to jerk everybody's chain here at allnurses. What is it that you are really seeking besides the negative attention you are drawing to yourself so far? How can we really help you?

Life's lessons prove that no matter how much power and status a person seeking power and status have, they always want more. Some people think they are above the law, and even above their Creator God when it comes to power and status. You wouldn't be one of these people now would you?

Tweety.........I never said anything to ADNRN that was

out of line, so I make no apologies for what I said. I read through my post again, and I stand by what I said the first time. I am not asking for approval of how I approached ADNRN........just as everyone else can post their own personal approach to what ADRN has said, and is continuing to say.....I am entitled as a member to do the same. If I were wayyyyyyy out of line, a moderator would have slammed me on it by now. :kiss

You know what "ADNRN"............the only thing I enjoy seeing on your post thus far is the picture of that very cute doggie you use as an avatar! Go love on him/her awhile and see if your mood doesn't mellow out somewhat. Pets are known for mellowing people out when they aren't feeling well. Sounds to me like you could use a little pet attention. Have a nice day!

Tweety........and this is my second (and last) post to ADNRN. I have no plans of posting anything else to his/her thread. I am only recopying my only two post back to back for you since you thought I was joining in on the cruelty to him/her. I was NOT! I will NOT! Therefore.......I'm done with this thread altogether. :)

Have a great night everyone! :kiss :zzzzz :zzzzz :zzzzz

Sweetness, I certainly wasn't saying you were cruel. No one was cruel. Of course you have nothing to apologize for. Let me just say for the things you've said like "the only cute thing I've seen in your post so far.......", or criticizing his choice of his name, is so unlike most of the interactions I've seen you have with people, it's a little hot, comparatively speaking. That's why I commented specifically on you. Sorry. (Perhaps, though I'd better take you off the pedastal I have you on.)

I confess also to not reading every post in every thread by this poster. I did miss the inflammatory statements he made to Mother Theresa. I only read the one's where he said he was striving to be like her.

I myself have actually been known to start some controversial remarks on other subjects: But, I have actually read through all of these and find that it is just great debate. ADNRN is just stating what he/she believes in-so, it's ok with me. Best to you/

hty/

because I don't get this post at all. I am thoroughly confused, and reading the OP's response to every poster has only INCREASED my confusion. Let me see, could I be dumb because I ONLY have an ADN??? (NO offense to any REAL NURSE on here, regardless of what degree you have. We all know that we have worked hard to get what we have, the title of NURSE, and that the alphabet soup behind our name doesn't change the fact that we have all suffered and seen hard times to become a nurse)

Quote originally posted by ADNRN:

And did you really say, "If everyone had an ADN, how would we learn from one another?" Tell me you're joking. We go to college and get PhDs so we can do original research on artists, inventors and philosophers who never spent a day in college. And while this is a topic for another post, here's something you may have to come to terms with some day: we're pretty much at the end of technology and the need for further medical research. We are entering a time of doing, a time for caring about one another, a time for--dare I say it--kindness. Why can't a DNSc find a way to take a selfish uncaring nurse and turn him into a caring dedicated humanitarian? Start funding that research and I'll jump on the PhD bandwagon myself.

Ummmm, do you REALLY think we are at the end of technology and the need for further medical reasearch? What about a cure for cancer, or AIDS, or MS or any of the other incurable diseases??? Do we not need to research more on these issues to find a cure for them?? Or perhaps a vaccine of some sort to prevent these diseases???

I do agree that we need to all CARE more about one another and out patients. But I think that is the ONLY thing I agree with, because I pretty much just get more confused as I read your posts.

I apologize if I offended anyone, but as you can tell, I am THOROUGHLY confused by this post. Maybe someone can enlighten me on the theme??

Not power, not status. Just so I can have a steady job where, hopefully, I won't get laid off or downsized without having other job options.

I'm just being honest. I ain't no Mother Teresa and don't pretend to be.

Doesn't upset me at all. I'm in the boat with you too, but I have a few others reasons too. Best of luck. We'll make it.

So.............you're afraid of becoming a glorified coffee fetcher? Or is it just that you have no desire to serve mankind with more sacrifice? You've given enough of your time to learning academicly and you'll just have to let someone else carry the load for the lord?

That's why its ok to quit trying to achieve a higher goal?

All I can say is, I don't see how you can assess my goals/ambitions/values based on my degree. Nobody's disagreeing that empathy and compassion are of primary importance in nursing. But it sounds like you're trying to say that as a BSN, I am power and status seeking and I have to say that you don't live in my heart. How do you know?

Specializes in Inpatient Acute Rehab.

To the original poster,

If it weren't for the BSN/MSN or higher, you would not be an ADNRN. Remember, it takes all levels of nurses to make nursing happen. So, I suggest you make sure your foot is clean, because I believe it is in your mouth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
