So I'm starting med/surg 1 this semester and will be starting clinicals the first week of February. We received notice today that we will need to be fitted for scrubs that will be ordered by the school - no exceptions! The class was then told that our scrubs will cost $200, and it's only for 2 tops, 2 bottoms, a lab coat and an apron for the girls. Am I the only person that thinks this is INSANE!!???
I would buy the scrub sets (2) and ditch the apron. Optional on the lab coat...I wasn't a lab coat wearer, but they're great for dress up! :)
Don't bother trying to sew on the logo, you have to match how the company sew on the patches with rest of your peers, uniformity on clinical sites are important to some schools and some nursing instructors ...don't risk yourself bring sent home because your uniform is "not in code." You'd be surprised what factors in your clinical grade...and professional appearance is one of the checklists that nursing instructors fill out...at least in the TWO that I attended (LPN and BSN program)...you are a reflection of the school, so uniformity in scrubs presents the perception that the school promotes Nightingale's philosophy, so that either the school can continue to have clinicals there down to the possibility of hiring graduates from your class...yes, it's that deep!!!
You can find solid colored scrubs for under $20 a set at AllHeart.com; stay away from main stream trendy brands like Dickies, Koi, Landau; go in with classmates for free shipping ( you will have time to meet people and order scrubs, you dont start clinical on the first day without any theory$ My tip? Go to your student nursing lounge at the very beginning or end of the semester, we dumped all our scrubs there when we graduated.

Is this in your school's Nursing program guide? The school's catalog? I'd want to see this "policy" in writing....

While that may seem expensive, it could be worse. We are required to purchase our scrubs from a company that the university decided on. It is $50 for the tops and $50 for the bottoms ($100 a set). They are embroidered with the university logo so we do not have to get patches sewn on. At least we are not required to purchase a certain number of scrubs. We have some students only have 1 pair and wash them multiple times a week. I'm too busy to deal with that and have 3 pairs. Costly but worth my time not having to wash them every night.
