Scrubs cost WHAT???

So I'm starting med/surg 1 this semester and will be starting clinicals the first week of February. We received notice today that we will need to be fitted for scrubs that will be ordered by the school - no exceptions! The class was then told that our scrubs will cost $200, and it's only for 2 tops, 2 bottoms, a lab coat and an apron for the girls. Am I the only person that thinks this is INSANE!!???

Does it include getting patches put on each top and coat? Honestly it doesn't sound outrageous to me.

That's crazy! My favorite scrubs are on the more expensive side of the spectrum and I can get two pairs for $90, maybe $30 for a lab coat. My patches are $0.25 a piece.

Plus I can't imagine your school can't get some sort of bulk discount!

What in the world do you need an apron for?

It does seem a little high, about 34.00 a piece.

I'm also wondering about the apron.

My top did cost me over 45.00, but the pants were more reasonable.

Am I to believe that guys could be part of your classes too? If so, why aren't they needing aprons? And Steph asks my other question - why aprons?? Lab coats would be protecting the scrubs and would need laundrering just as the lab coat/scrubs would if soiled. So what's the purpose?

The cost does include putting patches on each top/lab coat, and honestly I have no idea what the apron is for. There are three guys that are included in my class and they don't have to wear it. I'm in complete agreement, if we're wearing the lab coat, what's the point of an apron??? I just feel like the cost is completely crazy, especially since I could buy my own scrubs in the same colors for much cheaper elsewhere. Could even apply the patches myself!!

wow! Our tops were about $20 a piece, have to have two, and pants were the same. Having the patches sewn on was only another $7.00. The lab coat was about $40, but it's optional. I've never used mine and it was a waste. I'm much too warm to ever need it.

The price does seem a little high to me. I forget what I paid, but we did have to order from the school and both the scrub top and the lab coat came with patches sewn on them. I don't see why this would cost $200--it sounds to me like the uniform supplier might be price gouging, although I don't understand why the school would not go with another supplier.

As for the apron--I was trying to think of some joke about a combined nursing/baking degree, but this fell apart. No clue why you would need an apron.

That sounds high. For me, two sets of scrubs, jacket, patches, and cost to apply patches will be roughly $120 with tax included. Maybe your apron cost $80 or tax is ridiculously high, but someone is probably trying to make money.

Nurse apron?? Like, an old fashioned one? I'm very confused by that.

Our uniforms were approx $20 for bottoms and $22 for tops, $7 for patches, $10 for name tags. I'm not 100% on the patches and name tags but I know it wasn't much more. In total it wasn't more than $100. A lab coat was separate but I got mine for $10 with a local company.

Does that also include shoes by chance?! Otherwise I can't imagine why the charge would be that high.

If I wore an apron (?) and a lab coat over my scrubs, I would collapse in a puddle of sweat. Can you imagine putting on those horrid isolation gowns over all those layers?

Price seems very excessive -- I would inquire if any of the items can be considered optional!

Two tops, two bottoms and lab jacket plus patches cost me close to $300. The school was very specific on brand and style.
