Scrubs cost WHAT???

Published

So I'm starting med/surg 1 this semester and will be starting clinicals the first week of February. We received notice today that we will need to be fitted for scrubs that will be ordered by the school - no exceptions! The class was then told that our scrubs will cost $200, and it's only for 2 tops, 2 bottoms, a lab coat and an apron for the girls. Am I the only person that thinks this is INSANE!!???

Is this the apron????? How do you get to your pockets??? What about the guys?

Posting from my phone, ease forgive my fat thumbs! :)

What in the world?? Why does that even exist?

Holy crap! That's a LOT! Mine were from a local supply store and they offer students 20% everything in the store! My embroidered set were only like $50.

One of the LPN schools in my city has aprons. They are hip length and have pockets. They also wear caps.

All heart.com, decent deals if their sale items are your size. Some even 80% off sometimes.

I feel your pain, our uniforms cost $300! Our's are all white pants and vest with pockets (it looks like something a fisherman would ware lol) and a blue polo shirt. I will say that they still look brand new after a years worth of abuse having to wear it 3 days a week. I hope they hold out for next year!

Sometimes you can find your uniforms used. Many areas have a 'Buy, Sell, and Trade' page on FB that you can join. I know many people in my class that found their uniforms for $40 from someone who finished school or dropped out.

Last week I went to Goodwill just to poke around and I found the bottoms for 3.38 and the vest was on sale for .25. I snatched up both just in case something happened to my two sets.

It might be!!! When we had to have our "fittings" (which was us driving all the way to campus to be asked what size we wear, and again this was mandatory that we show up.....), the vendor didn't actually have a sample apron for us to "try on" or even look at. I'm really wondering if that's what it's going to be, and I had the same questions. How are we supposed to get to our pockets???? Why don't the guys in the class have to wear something equally ridiculous??? LOL again, it's only 1.5 years, I can put up with this as long as I can get my BSN! :)

Also, thanks to everyone for the suggestions for getting cheaper scrubs, we also have to wear whites and if they get ruined I will be looking for cheap replacements!! :D

I'm so over the sexist crap. "Aprons for women." On the whole, I don't complain about my school's uniform because it's all black with red trim. That is, it's black with red trim for women. If you're a guy you can just pick out a top. But we're required to have that red trim because we're women. So our options are already limited unless you have the time, skills, or $$$ to have trim sewn on.

Kinda hard to talk about everyone being treated equally when you start day 1 with differentiating between sexes.

My LPN program had these awful ugly white vests over polos with white scrub pants. It was horrid. I'm so glad that's over with. It could of been worse though. Their previous uniform was some kind of blue apron thing.

You bring up an excellent point!

The cost of scrubs is outrageous. Then I think about the poor kids who are sewing them for us in some lonely factory, and I get even more peeved. The $20 they make off of one shirt is probably what the kids make in a year. :cautious:

I couldn't agree more.
