Ridiculous Reasons to See the Nurse

Published

So, we really need a place to log the ridiculous reasons some kids have to get out of class and come see the nurse. You know, those pressing medical problems like, "my lips hurt." I had that one today.

Earlier this year I had a student come see me because she had a hair on her tongue!!

Somewhere there is a teacher giving these kids a clinic pass for these visits!

What are the crazy reasons to see the nurse at your clinic??

Had a 10th grader yesterday ask to lie down because the pinky finger he broke 3 weeks ago was bumped in the hallway. Um, no, and I am with someone and you just barged, in go to class.

He returned 15 minutes later with a headache from his finger being bumped. :sniff:

You are not manufacturing reasons to get out of English class:no: go away!

My favorite thing is when I have someone come in and they say their piercing hurts and THE BACK OF THE EARRING IS EMBEDDED INTO THE LOBE. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GO TO CLAIRE'S TO GET YOUR KIDS EARS PIERCED

Actually this is what happens when the kid or parent squeezes the back on too tight. Starter earrings sold by Claire's have backs that are designed to sit tightly on the very end of the post in a groove, allowing for some swelling. If the kid or parent pushes the back up against the lobe then there is going to be a problem if it swells.

This is my first year as a middle school nurse, and here are some of the ridiculous reasons kids have come to see me...

"I can't sneeze."

"My ear hurt, then it switched to the other ear and went away." Soooo, it doesn't hurt now? "No."-same kid that loosens the screw on his glasses so he has a reason to annoy me. Same kid that had a leg infection because his dad has a leg infection.

A VERY mad student because I wouldn't cut all of his fingernails.

"I'm bored."

"The teacher sent me to sleep because I stayed up too late."

A sped student sent down because he was wiping boogers on things.

"I think I choked on my pill this morning before school."

"My face is dry."

"Can you pop my finger?"

" I got wet playing in the mud."

"I got marker on my face."

"I got hit in the eye with chocolate."

An elaborate story about falling off a 2 story building and breaking his tailbone. Wanted to borrow my crutches.

"Will you buy me lunch?"

These are MIDDLE SCHOOL kids!

I think this one might be the winner of my clinic: "We were sitting on the floor answering questions. The boy next to me answered too loudly and now my ear hurts." I just sat and looked at her with my mouth open. She asked for an ice pack and I told her, nope, I'm sorry---no ice pack for something so silly. She was shocked :wacky: Of course, I called her mother to tell her what she told me and recommended that she be seen by a physician if the pain continues :D

This is a weird one. We have a pre-K program at one of our schools, but the pre-K program has it's own health coordinator. The district nurses do not see the pre-K students except for helping with screenings, and emergent stuff because the health coordinator is not there all the time. They have different paperwork than us and everything.

I work in the high school of this district. An angry and irritated mom calls me yesterday saying her student goes to pre-K and they keep trying to send him home when he doesn't have his inhaler with him. I said to her "Do you realize that you are talking to the high school nurse about this?" Mom: "Well yeah, I thought you should know!" Mom: "I can't afford 2 inhalers, so if we forget his inhaler, I have to come get him!! You are preventing him from going to school, and he has special needs so he needs to be in school!!!" At this point I figure what the heck? I'll bite the bullet. Me: "Are they allowing you to bring in his inhaler if you forget it?" Mom: "Well, yeah." Me: "So I guess I don't see the problem?" Mom: "You just don't understand!" Me: "Well it seems to me that they would like the inhaler at school so that they can properly treat your child if he has an asthma attack at school. I'm guessing they are concerned about your child's safety."

During this whole conversation, I hear another woman in the background going on and on about how this student has a right to be in school and we are taking that right away by no allowing him to be there even if he doesn't have an inhaler. I keep stopping what I am saying so I can hear what she's saying as well as what the mom is saying. The mom says to this other woman "They're concerned about his safety if he doesn't have his inhaler."

Then the woman in the background says "That's it, we're going to report the school to the department of education, and tell that nurse that we are going to report her too." OK. Have at it.

So I call the person in charge of the pre-K program and inform her of this conversation. They've been trying to work with this mom regarding this situation and are trying to get some clarification of this student's orders from the doctor. Apparently there was a communication breakdown SOMEWHERE. In the meantime, I am anxiously awaiting the call from the DOE. :nailbiting:

It's hat day here today, I can already guess how many LD are going to show up with head aches or say they feel hot!

BTW, my hat is giving ME a HA already. I don't dare take it off...the hat hair will scare the kiddies! (Several of the smart ones did stop me in the hall this morning to tell me how pretty and cute I look in my new hat! LOL!! they want something, I just know they do)
