As a pre nursing school student I have enjoyed this website. It has allowed me to “chat” with nurses who are currently in the field and get some much needed support and information about the nursing field. At the same time it is very frustrating reading the same debates ASN v.s BSN RN, LPN v.s RN, LPN/RN v.s CNA. This make me second guess my choice in changing my career to health care field. I currently work in the business as a customer service rep ( was working on a BSN in office administration before changing my major to nursing) and I am constantly remind that have no real title or authority. Sometimes I wonder if I chose to take the ASN (because of my age) if my future nursing peers will criticize me as taking the “easy” route in becoming a RN. Please tell me that this issue does not come up too much in the everyday careers lives of heath care professionals as it does it on these threads. I always wanted to become a nurse but seems that there is just as is it true that there is just much politics and drama as there is in the business field?

It doesn't come up in the work field like it does in the threads, or at least not as much. Mostly everyone just wants to know if you are an LPN or RN. I heard more from my family and people out of the hospital that would ask what do you do for a living and I would say a nurse. There next question was usually "Oh are you an RN." and for 15 years I had to say "No, I'm an LPN." then they always had that look on their face like "she thinks shes a nurse" which always erked me. Now that I'm an RN I have never had someone ask me "Are you a diploma, ASN, BSN or MSN" every now and again me and my colleges talk about going back but most of us are ASN. Most of them feel that they don't want to be a nurse manager or teacher so why go back.

Howdy MyDee. Welcome. Yes it is frustrating to read the same questions over and over. On the other hand this is the largest Nursing Forum in the WORLD, and in this forum are over 200 sub-forums.
Sometimes new people get lost, sometimes old people do too. Just today I discovered I didn't know we don't have a specific recovery room (pacu) forum.....and I have been here gosh.....6 years? Gonna have to recheck that.
I usually have the philosophy that if you are nice about it, I will answer just about anything, or at least tell you where the answer is. (Aka direct you to a previous thread)
Now on to the degree debate.....that's a sticky wickett...no I don't play cricket. If you learn what you need to know, and you can graduate and pass your licensing exam, and someone hires you and you work well.......it really doesn't matter does it? I went from a bachelor's degree to an associate degree. And it only took 12 years. No one had better tell me I'm not as good as any other Nurse. And I won't stand for anyone to tell another Nurse their degree stinks.
OK,MyDee welcome. And post, post, post, and soon you will get "habituated" to allnurses. Addicted is such a harsh term.

The best way to keep enjoying the site: Skip over any thread that presents such a debate. The site is set up so that you can read what you like and ignore the rest.
Oh golly wolly Eric you are SO RIGHT about that.

I agree with everything stated here. (Except I am not a RN yet.) But, I have to say also there is alot of venting here, most people do not want to vent at work and make others feel awkward.
And, like Eric said, you can always jump over the threads that you do not want to read.

Basically being in the healthcare business, we all second guess our paths to get there. We only have experience in the past we chose- not what others did. Basically we say our way is the best because it"s all we know.

You know they actually teach debating in school...don't you? There is a purpose for it.

WHAT???!!!! What about "McDonald's vs.Burger King"? That thread was shut down before a consensus was reached-so disappointing.I am waiting for the resurrection...Anyone remember the "coffee or tea" thread? Long time members left the allnurses site forever after that one closed....

How about Coke vs. Pepsi?
Beta vs. VHS?
Mac vs. PC?
Rolling Stones vs. The Beatles?
Some people enjoy debate. I don't personally, but as Eric said, if I don't want to participate I skip over it.

Breast or bottle when the moms from the breast feeding site came over...? That was a thread for the history books.
