Members are discussing different ideas and opinions related to Nurses Week celebrations. Some members express disdain for activities like group photos, videos, and scavenger hunts, while others suggest more practical gifts like gift cards or free meals. There is also a humorous exchange about the appropriateness of certain activities in healthcare settings and references to popular songs.
I am on the nurse week committee planning activities this year. We are planning a scavenger hunt, when you find the item you will post your find to our Facebook page. I am considering having them "find" people from support departments It, environmental, good service ect. But what other things could i have them find? Or do?
My employer generally does a pretty good job with nurses week. PTO raffles, Meals like pizza and pasta delivered to the unit, gifts etc...... nothing with hospital logo on it. I can't imagine taking time to perform a scavenger hunt and I would never post anything even complimentary about my employer on Facebook or any social media platform. I have known many nurses who have done so and regret it.
Hppy
This event has nothing to do with nurse week but is an example of making nurses and other employees feel appreciated. True story; if you can believe it. Some of my old ER friends still work in the PICU of our local children's hospital. It was about a 9 days after Hurricane Harvey had come through and the CEO of the hospital visited the night shift PICU, being nice, he asked if there was anything they needed. One of the nurses said, "Yea, you can buy us the Mayweather/McGregor fight tonight." And he did! I have photos of the CEO watching the fight with the night shift on the hospital cafeteria bigscreen at 11:00 pm - complete with snacks. It worked out perfectly because some of the staff wasn't interested in boxing and minded the store so those who wanted to see it could go watch.
Also - this same hospital handed out $500.00, non-taxable, Hurricane Harvey assistance checks to every employee.
BAM - now that's how you show employee appreciation!!
Well it has been awhile since I worked on an inpt unit in a hospital, but as far as I can recall....every shift was an unplanned scavenger hunt! Where is this? Who has that? Where can I get this?? Who is doing this/
I think there is probably a bit of that still going on, so a scavenger hunt may not be the most fun thing to do! UGH, good luck!
The only time I do a scavenger hunt is on new employee orientation, We get everyone involved to include the patients who have been with us for a period of time. It is a wonderful diversion for the patients while they are with us and a chance to meet the new employees.
I would be a little cheesed to have to go through another scavenger hunt for a bonus, or employee evaluation once is enough for me.
If it is for Annual training then there are ways you can be creative. We did a casino environment before and the staff loved it. Some even volunteered the next year to teach a portion.
For nurses day: I have always provided a free PTO day that must be used before the end of fiscal year and not to be used with holiday unless approved and covered. Never had any complaints.
OP---goodness! You've been blasted, haven't you! Anyway---it really isn't a good idea. Listen to the nurses who responded, and if your hospital admin is truly interested in honoring the nurses, then present some of the ideas---useable gift cards for PTO, meals delivered daily (and nightly) to the units, bonuses, etc., are much more indicative of the appreciation admin has for the nursing staff than a scavenger hunt that might only bring pain to someone. I know your intent is good, but please, rethink this.
