For those who work nights currently or have worked nights at some point do you want different hours? Working 7p-730am is tough on sleep and can be difficult on your personal life. I really feel for those working 8pm-830am.
What would be better for night shift workers. Day people still benefit regardless of the change.
4pm-430am
5pm-530am
6pm-630am
10-6am 4 days a week but paid like 5.
I'll keep 7pm-730am
If I had to choose I would do 4 pm-4:30 am simply because I wouldn't be travelling with any traffic on my way home. I work both days and nights at my job. We to 7-7 shifts. Whenever I work nights and start returning home at 7 am it takes me around an hour or more to get home in the direction I'm headed. However when working days and returning home at 7 pm it takes me around half an hour.
When I went to another area of the hospital, I left the 3 12's schedule for 4 days a week, a mix of 8 and 12s. I miss some things about nights - days are very hectic, keeping track of all the meals and just way more people...I'm getting used to that. I do not miss centering my life around sleep like I had to on nights. It dominated my life for almost two years. I think I sleep better at night than I do during the day. I don't miss getting two hours of crummy sleep only to be woken up by a lawnmower or the doorbell.
I think in general, night shifters would like to get to bed as soon as possible, preferably before the sun comes up, the bigger question is how many day shifters would want to start at 3 AM?
As a day shift nurse I think it's fair. The night would be sort of split to some degree. Day shift nurse gets to sleep during most of the night enjoying their significant other. Night shift nurse gets to sleep when it is actually still dark at night and gets to enjoy their significant other. Maybe help ease the difficulty of sleeping during sunrise.
Back in the day (1970s-1080+)..... I loved working nights, even when they were 8 hr shifts, more automy, and the differential...... Now at almost 68yr/age, I would not mind nights, if, and ....that is a BIG IF, I had no family.....
grateful for for my physician office hours, with very liberal holiday time off....
I don't think day shift gets the benefit of working days if they are coming in at 3-4am. I work day shift 7a-7:30p and shift up to work 3a-3:30p when it's needed without a problem, however it's not something I do more than a few shifts a schedule. When working at 3am I'm in bed between 6-7pm, so I lose a big part of my day. I lost my entire Friday night since I was already in bed when my friends and coworkers were just getting off work. I'm happy to do it occasionally to help my unit out, but it's not a shift I would voluntarily sign up for for 100% of my shifts. I'd rather just work nights and get the benefit of the shift differential for the entire shift.

My comment was not to be taken negatively as a day versus nights. This poll is not about that. Please refrain from taking this thread down that road. I was just simply stating Day shift still benefits working days. That is it. There is not hidden sarcastic message in that.
I am actually a Day nurse not nights. I have worked nights to help out and once for a year. As a day RN. I would love working 5am-530pm. I think mothers and fathers who cook would like that as well.
