For those who work nights currently or have worked nights at some point do you want different hours? Working 7p-730am is tough on sleep and can be difficult on your personal life. I really feel for those working 8pm-830am.

What would be better for night shift workers. Day people still benefit regardless of the change.

I work 8 hour nights, but I work 7-on, 7-off, so that is just 56 hours every 2 weeks. That way I have an entire 7 days off, every other week, so I can work extra on those days if I want to. I'm never short on sleep this way.

Here the shifts are 5-5:30, So I've had to be up by 3:30am, I hated it... I can easily adjust to a schedule that gets my up at 5am each morning but earlier, I just can't seem to get to bed/asleep by 8:30pm to get a good 7 hours.

I did 4-4:30 nights for a while, and if I was single that wouldn't have been bad, as it is, I left for work before my kids got home from school and I couldn't manage to stay awake when I got home in order to see them in the mornings.

When I started nursing and was young and single I worked 2:30-11p shift, I loved it because my friends never really got started with their club hopping unit 10:30 or 11 anyways and I could sleep in. Once I had kids I had the time in to switch to that lovely 6:30a-3pm shift... With the every other weekend, I had one weekday off to run errands and do banking, was home in time for the kids and didn't have to turn in to early. I loved 8 hour days.

Now I work a combination of 12-10-8 hour days depending on the week. My hours are scheduled somewhere between 7am-7:30pm. It the next best thing to 8 hour day shifts.

I did my preceptorship 12am-12pm which I loved. You sleep regular hours and you have time to do all u need in the morning before heading to work. This schedule was in the ED.Too bad they don't hire new grad there but I will start there at that hospital in Tele which is 7-7:30. Hopefully after a year I can transfer to the ED.

Now that I am working nights again. I can say for sure I would rather be going in at 10pm and getting off at 6am. I am only putting my time in until I get moved up to days.

At my hospital nights work 9:30-07:30...

ive done 7-7 before and found it better.

This is my DREAM shift!

My comment was not to be taken negatively as a day versus nights. This poll is not about that. Please refrain from taking this thread down that road. I was just simply stating Day shift still benefits working days. That is it. There is not hidden sarcastic message in that.

I am actually a Day nurse not nights. I have worked nights to help out and once for a year. As a day RN. I would love working 5am-530pm. I think mothers and fathers who cook would like that as well.

As a mother, your options do not suit me in the slightest. So no, all mothers and fathers will not agree. No, your suggestions do not suit the day shift better and still benefit them. I have worked both day and night. 7-7 is ideal even if there are slight complaints from both shifts. Coming in at 4 or 5 am for day shift may sound like a benefit but it truly isn't. It means waking up earlier. To do that, you must go to bed earlier. That is easier said then done. Especially for those with families or who live with room mates. An earlier shift start would likely just lead to more nurse fatigue in day shift.

7-7 also makes it so that shift report does not happen during meals or med pass times. Both are times in which all nursing staff are needed.

I could go on, but no, this is a terrible idea. And anyone who wants alternate hours should find a job offering them. Not seek change in the current hours. NOC shifters know the hours when they accept a job. There is choice. Same for day shift.

I love this shift because it allows me some travel time to get to a 7 - 3 shift without being too late. Or better yet, I can miss some traffic on the way home.
