For those who work nights currently or have worked nights at some point do you want different hours? Working 7p-730am is tough on sleep and can be difficult on your personal life. I really feel for those working 8pm-830am.

What would be better for night shift workers. Day people still benefit regardless of the change.

4pm-430am

5pm-530am

6pm-630am

10-6am 4 days a week but paid like 5.

I'll keep 7pm-730am

I worked 730-730. I didn't know how much I didn't like it until I switched facilities and now work 630-630. It feels more "natural" to me especially in winter when I go to bed and most of the time its still dark out. Feels just like a day shift in some sense. Report can go long or **** it the fan as anyone knows though it feels still better than starting this process at 730 and leaving at ~8am or after. Being able to get off earlier is less of a determent on sleep I found and getting up for that shift I eat dinner at a regular time and then off to work instead of waiting for 7-715 to come to leave. I like it and wouldn't trade it. Going in earlier reduces anytime I want to spent outside if its summer or if I have errands to do. Its the best compromise for me.

I love 7p-7a!!! I absolutely HATE 8 hour shifts even 11p-7a, which is what I work now, 4 days per week.. hate it.

12 hours is no big deal. My brain knows I am working 3 days a week and not 4 or 5. With that said, I voted "I'll keep my 7p-7a" but that is because I had them in the past and want them back... If I ever accomplish getting a job off of the floors (not providing any direct patient care and working in management), I will be fine with 8 hours per day/5 days per week ... and I am even willing to work Days....

If you chose 10pm-6am yes it is one more day but you are also getting paid for 40 hours.7pm-7am pays you for 36 hours. That is an extra 4 free hours for working nights.

Ah. See, every 11-7 shift I've been interested in required five days; there wasn't that freebie shift in there. I would be willing to try that if it was available, just to see how it would be, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be a thing where I live.

I'm a dayshift nurse, working five days 7-330. My hospital is either five eights or combo 8/12 hr shifts four days a week (40 hours =full time). In process of trying to change to 3 12's as full time. There are a few at my work who would like the 3a-3p. I've picked up 3a-7a before my 8, and find it not so bad. I changed offnof

combo of 8/12. I like my 8s, but if I were to switch back to 12's I'd seriously consider the 3a.

I'm also single, no kids so I don't need to consider time caring for anyone at home.

Our ER has 3PM to 3AM shifts, as well as 11AM to 11PM. I would love to do one of those. I currently do 7PM to 7AM and it can be a killer sometimes.

Interesting I am surprised the nurses that want to work 3am-3pm.

2pm-2am or 3pm-3am would be wonderful. Even 4pm-4am would still allow me to get home before the sun comes up & fall asleep a little more easily.

I currently work 2nd shift (3-11) 5 days/week. I am well rested most days but I miss having 4 days off. I also work every other weekend, so at least twice a month, my 2 days off are spread out & not together. Hoping to get back to 3 twelves soon.

I am too. That would be the worst schedule I can think of!

My first one I worked I was thinking it would be awful. My first thought when I was asked to come in for a 3am was "you are crazy" . Have to get up in the middle of the night to go to work sounded bad, but I was pleasantly surprised

I never came in at 3am but, I will give it a try. I get to miss out on Administration for several hours lol so that is a PLUS. You get to learn about your patients before rounds bombards you with questions. So I see even more positives with a 3am but, would rather do 4am. As a day nurse I would enjoy getting off at 330pm. Traffic free for the most part unless you in LA, Bay area or NYC. Less nurses would be late due to traffic. Getting home at 330pm I would need to go to sleep by 830-9pm.

More units outside ER need to offer a variety of shifts to increase nurse retention and satisfaction. I really think a change in hours would do Everyone some good. Maybe more people would be willing to work nights. The night shift is normally short staff nationwide.

1. It's interesting you'd like to have that time with patients before rounds because I WOULD NOT. I would be pretty pissed if I spent 4 hours caring for my patients and then like a third of the way though my shift the plan of care was upended. As far as 11-11's go, I think having to deal with rounds at the END OF A NIGHT SHIFT would be possibly the worst thing that has ever happened to me.

2. I did a brief stint in a CTICU where there were three different start times with 8s and 12's. 7, 11 and 3. That was necessitous because 11 and 3 are when most open hearts came out of the OR and needed to be singled for a few hours until they could be doubled In the ICU where I work now Our patients come out of the OR at all times of day (Transplants mostly), that would be an absolute nightmare because our nurse to patient ratio can never exceed 1:2, managing all of those potential 4 hours gaps would put us in dangerous situations. While having multiple shifts in some places might make employees happier and better adjusted, I don't see it panning out that way, at least where I work. Having multiple shift options really just creates scheduling nightmares in my experience, and inadequate staffing doesn't exactly lead to better retention.

They've adjusted my shift to match that of someone who just retired. I was working 11-7:30 x 5 days/week but now I work 11-8:30 x 4 days/week. It's 40 hours vs 36 and it's hard to stay into day shift like that, but I was already here until 8 most days anyway.
