Microbiology: Spring 2010

Published

Hello. Anyone out there taking Micro this semester? I thought I would start a thread for us to talk and discuss microbiology for the semester. I am looking forward to it.

What textbook are you going to be using? I am using Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy - Robert Bauman. I am picking it up tomorrow.

I think it will be a great semester! :yeah:

I just took my second exam today! I have no idea how I did and it's spring break so I'll have to wait until next Tuesday to see my grade!! I'm so nervous. I think I over studied metabolism but we had some side readings to do and I did not study those enough. I read them once, thinking I would retain the important stuff but one question asked me to list two reasons for something and I could only list one =( at least I'm positive I got 100% on my lab quiz. It was my third one and I got Bs on the last two so I need this A!

Hope everyone else is hanging in there!

Gosh, got an 89 on my first lecture test and a 92 on my Lab midterm. We are finishing the chapter on viruses and starting bacterial growth. Also just got my unknown -- woo hoo! Must stay focused...

Can someone help me with bacterial counts of food? I'm not getting it. Here's my example: Ten grams of ground beef are added to 90 ml of sterile water. After blending, 0.1 ml is used to inoculate a plate of gen purpose media. After 24hrs incubation, a total of 73 colonies are present on the plate.

How many CFU's were present on the plate? and How many CFU's are present in 1 g of the ground beef?

What is considered a "best plate"? Or how do you arrive at that?

I am clueless and my professor yells at everyone in lab if they ask questions. We literally have to teach ourselves the entire course.

Thanks! :uhoh3:

I am still here!!!! Working my butt off...Mbio is h.a.r.d. Many classmates are failing and some have dropped. I have an A/B in the class as of now and the only thing that keeps me going is knowing I can apply to clinicals in 4 weeks!!! I am also taking Anantomy and Physiology II so if I get through this semester with B's in both classes, I will totally be cool with that.

OK, has everyone DIED :D ??? No one has posted anymore ... has micro consumed all of you, did all of you withdraw? I need to know I am not the only one carrying on ...

Microbial genetics is STILL a *****! I have a test next Thurs on it too :p

I'd say half our class has dropped. We had our second exam last week and the prof said the test grades were 8-10 points lower than they were for the first one. And the first one's average was mid 80's.

But I got a 99! :w00t:

The class is super hard but I'm loving it! I'm actually going to be kinda disappointed when the semester ends.

A lot of people say that A&P is tougher than micro, but I beg to differ. I am studying harder now for micro than I did for A&P. I don't know what it is, but the material is a little more dense if you ask me. Thankfully I am doing very well, this is one class I am definitely earning my grade! Many people in my class have dropped also. Sitting in the very front of the classroom right in the prof's face helps keep me focused :D ... I hate the distractions of other students.

Micro lab has started to become more interesting ... we're doing our unknown at this time, and we just finished learning about all these biochemical tests and cool results we get to observe. I feel like a real biologist when I prepare my own slide from smear to Gram stain :p

Hang in there everyone! Almost there!!

I got a 88.5% on my first lecture exam. it was extremely disappointing because i knew the info, but second guessed myself! For the longest time I've been use to getting mid to high A's on all of my tests, but not this class!!! I'm on spring break right now & have my second lec exam the monday we get back on microbial genetics, microbial metabolism, & genetic recombination. I haven't been able to study and focus because i have family from out of the country visiting :/ But i know i need to study harder if i want a better grade. Ugh microoooooooooooo!

I am spiriling down the drain... and fast. Each test I do worst. I started with a high B and has progressed down to low B to high C.

However, to my defense, I had to miss 3 classes because my daughter is graduating HS and we have been traveling a lot doing college visits and basketball tryouts in and out of state. In addition to planning for senior prom and graduation. Unfortuately, I am a single parent and I have to do everything!

The good thing is she got a full college athletic scholorship..:yeah: But I am very dissappointed and a little scared that I am doing so poorly. :crying2: I can honestly say, i don't think the class is too difficult but I just havent' been focused. If I could do it over again without all these distractions, I am sure i could pass with an A.

However, I have a high A in AP2

I am doing marvelous in Microbiology this semester! I received the highest grade on the Laboratory Practical! I have a 94 % average! I love my Professor and she is very knowledgeable and she keeps the class focused. A lot of people are doing poorly or have dropped the class. I know how difficult a 5 unit class is, but I am really enjoying this semester and I can't wait for nursing school to start this Fall 2010! Wishing you all the best of luck this semester and I know all of you can pull it off and get into nursing school! Good luck!

I got a 99% on my last lecture exam! :yeah: And this was the test I was worried about the most, covering microbial genetics, classifications and specific bacterial illnesses. Guess all that hard work is paying off! And this is by someone who got a D in General Biology his freshman year in college ...

If you put your mind to something, anything is possible!

CONGRATULATIONS PACO! I have a 94% average in Microbiology now, with only 7 1/2 weeks left of the semester! Nursing school here I come!

Kudos to you ladyoj69! That's awesome! I was really scared about taking this class, but now I see what it takes to do well. Once you learn the professor's lecture and testing style, it counts for a lot. My professor has been reviewed on ratemyprofessors.com and she is supposedly pretty hard. But I can see why people say that, they just don't approach the class correctly and don't want to put in the time to learn the material. She gives us everything we need to get an A, and the tests have no surprises! I don't know why students are also afraid to visit the professors during office hours, I mean THAT'S why they are there, to help! PLUS I read my textbook chapters before the lectures just to get a gist of what's to come. I also noticed that the more I pay attention during lecture, the less I have to study for the test. The studying should really be review, not learning. It's a shame more people are not posting on here asking for help. I've done my best to post my ideas and my links to websites and YouTube videos that help me but no idea how many people are using them.

I noticed one girl leave yesterday's exam dead-set on withdrawing. Of course, she's also one of the ones chatting back and forth behind me with a friend during lecture. It's a shame when people give up so easily.
