Hello. Anyone out there taking Micro this semester? I thought I would start a thread for us to talk and discuss microbiology for the semester. I am looking forward to it.
What textbook are you going to be using? I am using Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy - Robert Bauman. I am picking it up tomorrow.
I think it will be a great semester!
We got our first exams back Monday night. If the teacher is telling the truth and that was the easiest test we will have in that class, I'm going to be in trouble! I got a 90.5% but I studied my tail off! And every week we have to do a lab report. Last week's was 11 pages long. Still haven't gotten the grade back yet. Hopefully tonight. Started this weeks lab report and it's already 7 pages long!
Quiz tonight on microbial genetics and fungus. Oh boy....
Ugh, I have a 5 chapter test on infectious disease and immunology next week.
On Friday, my 8 y/o daughter broke her right arm. (both ulna and radius) She had to go into surgery to have a closed reduction, and was in the hospital overnight. Studying this week is proving quite the challenge as I have to do everything for her. She is not allowed to move her arm at all. If the bones move she will need surgery to have rods "installed" She is so sweet, and is doing well.
i was wondering if anyone has to due unknown reports for their labs? everything we do in lab is based on trying to figure out what microbe we have.
You mean like looking for things such as gram pos or neg, that sort of stuff? It is fun I think, your chance to be a detective. NCIS stuff :)
Have fun with it. :)
I must say, I am not enjoying this class. Just memorize it, spit it back out, then forget. We have exams every week, and I find there is not enough time to really LEARN the information. I do not see any point to memorizing organisms and all their lab characteristics. There are certainly some beneficial things that are covered in terms of aseptic technique and disinfectants though. I have an A thus far, but am not getting much out of the course.
Rant off.
I have a B average so far and i am not pleased. The test are not that hard, however, I have been making some stupid mistakes. I have to admit I have not been putting 100% in the class, more of my efforts are going toward AP2 which I have an A.
I don't really like the class and the labs are not really enjoyable because everything is rushed and we don't get a chance to go back to lab and practice what we learned. I am glad we have spring break next week so i can catch up and hopefully pull my grade up. This semester has been stressfull and my motivation has seen better days
Good luck to everyone.
I need help with metabolism, please! How are you guys getting this stuff? Does anyone have any specific ways to break this down, or any resources that you have found helpful?Thank you!
Perhaps you can be more specific in which metabolic pathway you are having trouble with. Cellular respiration, fermentation etc...
Metabolism is a chemical chain of events that is either Catabolism where organic molecules are broken down into simpler compounds such as in the citric cycle, or anabolism in which molecules are constructed from simpler compounds, the ribosome used in protein synthesis to name one example. So if you can be more specific I am sure help will follow in your metabolizing this subject :)
Good luck guys,
Micro was my favorite class of all times. I loved every aspect of it especially the disease section (awesome). Just keep in mind to rewrite cycles (which shouldn't be that hard if you took bio, chem, or anatomy in the past). When you get to the pathology section, just place the diseases in groups and memorize the unique characteristics to distinguish between them.
Hope you like this class as much as I did : )

woo first exam back and got an 88% =) i know it's not the best but an 87 is the cut off for an A- in this class, so i think i will be okay. plus the class average was a 62 (yikes!) so i am pretty pleased. we've only had a small quiz in the lab thus far and i got an 85% =/ (10-pt quiz) really stupid mistake. oh well, i am confident that i will be doing much better on the following quizzes/exams/papers :) congrats to everyone else that's done well.
you all can do well, i believe and i'm proud of everyone here!
