Microbiology: Spring 2010

Published

Hello. Anyone out there taking Micro this semester? I thought I would start a thread for us to talk and discuss microbiology for the semester. I am looking forward to it.

What textbook are you going to be using? I am using Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy - Robert Bauman. I am picking it up tomorrow.

I think it will be a great semester! :yeah:

Congrats to you all who did well on your first exam.

I got a 95% on my first microbiology exam ... send in the dancing superheroes!

:dancgrp:

Well we had our second exam today, and I didn't do quite as well as on the 1st. (88% on this one, 94% on the first). I'm pretty upset, because I actually spent more time studying this time. I don't feel that it was so much I didn't know the material, as the questions were just written so as to confuse. I had the same problem with the quizes on thse units (which we take on-line on Blackboard), again not so much as because I didn't know it, but because I couldn't seem to understand what he was asking. I tried to get some help from him in "lecture" this week, to no avail.

I know a 88% is not the end of the world, but I am very frustrated. Like everywhere, our program is very competitive, and I feel I need all 'A's, particularly in the Sciences.

Well, mathematically you still have an overall of 91% so relax and breath :)

My first exam is Monday on chapters 1-7. Yikes!

I am loving the class, though. So much to remember but really interesting! I havent taken a chem class in 10 yrs and so far so good. Hopefully it continues!!

i like my class just finished first week.. we made agar in a batch .. itw as the slate agar i believe the tas or tsa something agar... itll be tough but itll be fun as well.. im looking forward to this one more than anatomy class.

Does anyone have any tips/insight about retaining all of this material? It is SO MUCH! I have my first exam on the 23rd, and it's covering 5 chapters including the intro, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, bacteria, and viruses. A&P2 was a breeze compared to this! I do note cards, practice quizes online, I have downloaded the chapters on my iPhone, I do LearnSmart. Some of the people in my class are taking it for the second and third time! I'm freaking out a little bit.:uhoh3:

There is definitely a lot of info to remember. I was so worried after I failed my first test, but I just got my grade back from the second test and I got a B. :yeah:

What I did was re-read the chapter and took notes from the text itself. Then I listened to the lecture I recorded on my pulse pen while following along with the powerpoint slides I printed out. I re-read my notes and quizzed myself with the chapter questions in the book. It is doable, but quite the challenge.

Thank you, and CONGRATS! Thankfully, my professor does drop one test grade.

i hate micro :(... a&p i see the need for it..but micro and chem.. icky.

lol.

on that note...

I can see however that micro is important to the nurse's knowledge base. We may not as nurses have to sit and contemplate how a flaw in the Krebs cycle is affecting a patient but it will help us understand disease, its virulence and its prevention.

Today we finished the microbial metabolism chapter. My head is spinning, so is everyone else's but I'm thinking positively that I can get through this well! :)

i took my first lab test today and got a 95. yay me! im super excited because there were only like 6 people in a class of 19 that got an A. My lecture exams are really tough because we have a multiple selection section. If you miss one answer you get the whole thing wrong. But the class is really exciting.
