Microbiology: Spring 2010

Published

Hello. Anyone out there taking Micro this semester? I thought I would start a thread for us to talk and discuss microbiology for the semester. I am looking forward to it.

What textbook are you going to be using? I am using Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy - Robert Bauman. I am picking it up tomorrow.

I think it will be a great semester! :yeah:

Hi Michael! I really appreciate your response. I am getting 2.230074519+43. When I multiply that by 2880 I get 6.422614617+46. I'm not even sure what that means - I know, terrible. I always have been horrible at math. Would you know what the +46 means? Maybe if I could figure that out I could get this converted to scientific notation and be done. Again, I truly appreciate how much you have helped me already!

If you break down the original formula I gave you into its simplest terms you should have x(t)= 2^144

Your first answer of 2.2 e+43 was correct I don't know why you multiplied that by 2880? Perhaps x(t) notation through ya, that is just a designator for the answer(not part of question) sort of like a function. Have you done functions in algebra like

X(f) x(g) F of G etc. Anyways your first answer was correct. what that means is that you have 2.23 x 10^43

or if you like 22300000000000000000000000000000000000000000 e.coli

As you can see writing this is scientific notation is much simpler and you should study this concept as you will see it a lot.

I think the point you should take away from this question is how exponential growth of bacteria can begin as 1 bacterium and turn into zillions in a few short days, that is why these type of infections can make someone sick in such a short time.

Hope that helped :)

Wow - yes I see what happened. I will definitely be needing to brush up on my algebra! I really just want to say that I am so very grateful for your help and patience. :bowingpur

Anytime :) I am pretty good with Bio, chem and math so feel free to ask anytime. One thing though, instead of latching onto another thread, the next time you have a question you should create your own thread. It keeps things more tidy.

Actually, I am glad she asked the question here. If it is related to Micro, then I think it is good to ask so we can try and help one another. Oh, and thanks for your math help. I am sure it will come in handy for many taking Micro this semester.

I thought it was better that she posted here. Lots of us have subscribed to this thread and whenever there are updates we just have to go to one place for micro Q&A as opposed to several others. That might be tidy on our end. The best thing that people can do when they reply to a post though is to keep the original post in their reply so that we know what the reply refers to.

Great thread! Will help me a lot this semester.

We had our first test a couple weeks ago (I got 94%) and have our 2nd one this week. I'm feeling pretty good so far, and I'm excited we are starting a "unknowns" in lab this next week. We start with 2 bacterium in a broth, and with a partner have to streak for isolation, and then each take one and identify it using standard tests. (We know we have one of 20 strains).

I like my prof., except we don't really have lectures. He has power-points and .mps lectures online, and we do them on our time. OTOH, he doesn't care if we come to class during lecture time! He is really good about answering questions, but sometimes I feel like we miss out because of lack of class discussion (like other people asking questions you don't think of). He also allows some E.C. every week, so I am making sure I take advantage of that!

Did you all know that you can go on iTunes and download/listen to microbiology lectures from certain schools for free? Just go to iTunes and search Microbiology. Even of you don't attend these schools, you might just benefit from some extra info or even get a better explanation on a certain topic ... cool

My instructor is huge on the chemistry. We have a chem quiz on monday. We have to memorize a bunch of functional groups. I took chemistry last semester, but we did not cover any organic chemistry. I am wondering if other instructors emphasize chemistry to this degree, or if mine is just unique.

Oh my gosh! The chemistry is ridiculous! My instructor said we are reviewing chemistry - no this stuff is NEW to me - all the organic stuff I did not have in my Chem class either. We are assigned LearnSmart modules and there are over 300 questions on Chemistry with the focus on the structures for organic functional groups.

Does anyone else have LearnSmart?

Oh, I know what you are talking about.

We didnt go too much into that in my Micro class. Isnt it strange how we are all going

to apply for the same type of job one day and yet the material we cover is so

broad?

It all depends on what teacher you get. When I had micro there was a tutor who was

in the nursing program and she didnt even know all the micro topics from my class,

because her instructor focused on different things.

We completely skipped the chemistry chapter. She just expects us to know it all. :uhoh3: I have went back to that chapter myself just to refresh on a few topics.

Just took my first exam for Microbiology. The grades are up and I got an A :D

Hard works pays off, study a lot and you'll pass, never fails!

Whew, we got our tests back from last week today in class and I got....an A! (99% to be exact) I guess all those sleepless nights I put in after I got my kids to bed last week paid off. You know, it's funny- the first time I went to college, I did study, but never really put much effort into it. I got mostly A's and B's, but never really had any responsibility to speak of. To be able to put up an A after 10 years of being out of school....and balancing work, 2 kids, a husband, a dog and a house to take care of, I am pretty darn proud of myself!! :yeah:

Keep working hard everybody- it will make things that much sweeter in the end!! :nurse:
