How much time do you *really*spend studying?
Studies have shown that one should study three hours per credit hour per week, minimum. I am taking Pharm and Foundations for a total of 10, so I have to shoot for 4 1/2 to 5 hrs per day.

Microbiology: Spring 2010
Can someone help me with bacterial counts of food? I'm not getting it. Here's my example: Ten grams of ground beef are added to 90 ml of sterile water. After blending, 0.1 ml is used to inoculate a plate of gen purpose media. After 24hrs incubation, a total of 73 colonies are present on the plate. How many CFU's were present on the plate? and How many CFU's are present in 1 g of the ground beef? What is considered a "best plate"? Or how do you arrive at that? I am clueless and my professor yells at everyone in lab if they ask questions. We literally have to teach ourselves the entire course. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the tip! And thanks as well to Michael, Paco, and Brighten! This board has been SO helpful!

Microbiology: Spring 2010
Thank you for the tip. So memorize stuff like Krebs and Glycolysis? There is a tremendous amount of detail. I was just wondering if there were any tips/tricks that were helpful. The professor doesn't like for anyone to ask questions. We all have to pretty much self teach. This is one of my last non nursing courses. I just have to get through it, but I need to really step it up because I got an 86% on the first exam. The highest grade in my class was an 89. I actually look forward to going to the class each day!

Microbiology: Spring 2010
The problem I am having is that it is so much information. I need direction on how to break it up into digestible chunks, if you will. Like, what do I need to memorize? All the various cycles, each enzyme. I am just a little overwhelmed. I'm done with all of my sciences - Chem & the A&P's. This subject is very interesting, I just am at loss in how to study/learn metabolism.

I need help with metabolism, please! How are you guys getting this stuff? Does anyone have any specific ways to break this down, or any resources that you have found helpful? Thank you!

Any day now!
I'm supposed to find out mid month, but I still go to the mailbox every day looking. I have only applied to one school, so if I don't get in, I will be crushed!

Micro or AP1.... WWYD?
I am in micro now. I have already taken, A&P1, A&P2 & chem. I would highly reccommend you take the A&P1 first, as it will lay the foundation for at least some stuff in micro like cells. Having chemistry before micro would he helpful as well. Micro is the hardest class to date for me. It's alot of material, and with summer semester being so compact, there's no room for error. Good luck to you. I have applied for Fall as well.

Would you guys recommend taking Micro or Anatomy/Phys first?
Definitely take A&P first, as you will have all the cell basics down. If you haven't already done so, take Chemistry before it as well because that is the foundation for microbiology.

Thank you, and CONGRATS! Thankfully, my professor does drop one test grade.

I am taking A&P "Risk Free" at Ocean County College
i think it's a waste of time and money. a&pi is very basic. i took it after a 20+ year absence from school, with only high school biology under my belt, and got an 'a'. you'll be fine!

Microbiology: Spring 2010
Does anyone have any tips/insight about retaining all of this material? It is SO MUCH! I have my first exam on the 23rd, and it's covering 5 chapters including the intro, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, bacteria, and viruses. A&P2 was a breeze compared to this! I do note cards, practice quizes online, I have downloaded the chapters on my iPhone, I do LearnSmart. Some of the people in my class are taking it for the second and third time! I'm freaking out a little bit.

Best advice for taking teas
I took it last month. I studied for about 8 weeks using testpreppreview.com, chem4kids.com, physics4kids.com, and an excellent test prep book, McGraw Hill's Nursing School Entrance Exams. I checked it out of the library. You can buy it off of Amazon as well. Also read reading everything on this website was extremely helpful! There is a TEAS test sticky that will also give you the breakdown of time limits for each section. The only thing that was not stressed, was that you have a lot of time. I would have done better if I not realized that in the first section, which was reading comprehension. The timer is at the top of the screen that gives you how many minutes you have left. I didn't know that up front. Good luck!

Oh my gosh! The chemistry is ridiculous! My instructor said we are reviewing chemistry - no this stuff is NEW to me - all the organic stuff I did not have in my Chem class either. We are assigned LearnSmart modules and there are over 300 questions on Chemistry with the focus on the structures for organic functional groups. Does anyone else have LearnSmart?
