Microbiology: Spring 2010

Published

Hello. Anyone out there taking Micro this semester? I thought I would start a thread for us to talk and discuss microbiology for the semester. I am looking forward to it.

What textbook are you going to be using? I am using Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy - Robert Bauman. I am picking it up tomorrow.

I think it will be a great semester! :yeah:

Perhaps you can be more specific in which metabolic pathway you are having trouble with. Cellular respiration, fermentation etc...

Metabolism is a chemical chain of events that is either Catabolism where organic molecules are broken down into simpler compounds such as in the citric cycle, or anabolism in which molecules are constructed from simpler compounds, the ribosome used in protein synthesis to name one example. So if you can be more specific I am sure help will follow in your metabolizing this subject :)

The problem I am having is that it is so much information. I need direction on how to break it up into digestible chunks, if you will. Like, what do I need to memorize? All the various cycles, each enzyme. I am just a little overwhelmed. I'm done with all of my sciences - Chem & the A&P's. This subject is very interesting, I just am at loss in how to study/learn metabolism.

The metabolism in micro is pretty basic. In physio (atleast for my school) the metabolism section was much more detailed. I think if u just memorize the basic pathways and how much atp comes out at each step then u should be fine. oh yeah and ATPase and maybe the enzymes.

Thank you for the tip. So memorize stuff like Krebs and Glycolysis? There is a tremendous amount of detail. I was just wondering if there were any tips/tricks that were helpful.

The professor doesn't like for anyone to ask questions. We all have to pretty much self teach.

This is one of my last non nursing courses. I just have to get through it, but I need to really step it up because I got an 86% on the first exam. The highest grade in my class was an 89.

I actually look forward to going to the class each day!

Check out youtube for videos on the sections you're having problems with. Sometimes seeing/hearing it in a different way really helps it click...as for remembering it all... when you find the answer to that one, let me know, too! My brain feels like complete mush at the end of a study session.

Class was going awesome until this past week. It was like my teacher suddenly went on a crack binge and sped through 4 chapters worth of power points in like 2 hours. I'm now picking my way through each chapter trying to teach myself all of it. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time finding videos and such. Videos help me tremendously!

Wait so if this is your last class - I am assuming you already took o-chem and physio? both of those classes should really help u with metabolism. What I did was make table of all the steps- i.e glycolysis, activation, kreb cycle and filled in like "atp made" "atp used" and etc...

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the videos that a Professor Fink has posted on YouTube. He outlines cellular respiration extremely well and thanks to him I was able to understand this well enough for my own exam (on which I got a 92 last week but what questions I did get wrong did not involve cellular respiration :D ) ... There are 7 parts to the whole lecture, the link to the first one is below. You will be able to click to the next video in the sequence at the end of each one. He's entertaining and probably because of that is why I got this down. For example, he equates glucose as a $10 bill and not being able to run a washing machine at the laundromat (your body) until you get the equivalent in quarters (ATP) .. seriously, WATCH THEM!!

Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this great resource!

If I get through Micro and Chemistry... especially Chm this semester it'll be a miracle! Urgh! Its hard to study this stuff and prepare for the NCLEX-PN at the same time.

Hi folks, this is my first post! I'm taking M.Bio this semester and am doing extremely well thus far. I am enjoying the class a lot although the funky bacteria smell is rather nauseating.

Hey Suse, metabolism is really tricky and I recommend going to youtube and searching for krebs cycle, electron transport system, etc.. the videos on there really helped me to visualize this stuff

Thank you so much for the tip! And thanks as well to Michael, Paco, and Brighten! This board has been SO helpful!

We're covering the chapter on microbial genetics right now in my class, and it's a royal *****!!! :grn: ... guess I will be doing some extra studying! Next week is spring break, no Cancun for me :D ... who am I kidding? I work too :p

OK, has everyone DIED :D ??? No one has posted anymore ... has micro consumed all of you, did all of you withdraw? I need to know I am not the only one carrying on ...

Microbial genetics is STILL a *****! I have a test next Thurs on it too :p
