Hello. Anyone out there taking Micro this semester? I thought I would start a thread for us to talk and discuss microbiology for the semester. I am looking forward to it.
What textbook are you going to be using? I am using Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy - Robert Bauman. I am picking it up tomorrow.
I think it will be a great semester!
Hm, okay, but googeling "malaria Michigan" brought up references contradicting that, including one from CDC's MMWR site. And according to the link to malaria on the MMWR site, malaria is worldwide except for anartica, the map associated shows which kind is in Michigan. I don't know if Malaria is the answer to your question but if it was my homework, I wouldn't rule it out due to location.
I have my final Tuesday. Going in with a 91. I hope to keep at least a B+. I think the average for the final exam (23% of the grade) is about a 60-65%.
This class has been a challenge, but I am not very good at memorization....just doesn't seem like "learning" to me. I'll be glad at 8PM on Tuesday!
My last test is on Tuesday evening as well! My lab practical was last Thurs and I got a 97 ... can't wait to get this one test out of the way. I am holding on to an A. One of the chapters is a freaking killer (specific defenses of the host, it's all about that B-cell/T-cell crap
) .... good luck everyone!
Seems as though we all feel about the same way :) I just recevied my grad for lab- got a 94 %- Woot! I have one more lecture test this week and need to get an 81% to keep my A. I am holding on for dear life. I really want this A!!! Interesting class, but WAY too much information. I am studying over 300 questions to prepare for my last test, can't wait til Friday!!!!!

So we have these Case studies to do for extra credit and this one is driving me nuts:
Bunch of people down the rd from lake michigan. Chick gets bitten by something, looks like a big mosquito bite. Next day ankle red and swollen, hot and tender. 24 hrs after incident pt is crying, sweating, shivering, pale, almost blue in some places and has red patches on her legs.
I'm given a whole list of possibilities. I know its nots Bartonella (no cat involved), Borrelia (s/s appear too early), Ehrilichia (s/s appear too early), Ricksettsia (s/s appear too early). No mention of buboes, not in a dengue fever or yellow fever area, so I'm left with a bunch of gram positive bacteria and some protzoa that I'm in the process of looking up. Any one point me in the right direction?
