Microbiology: Spring 2010

Published

Hello. Anyone out there taking Micro this semester? I thought I would start a thread for us to talk and discuss microbiology for the semester. I am looking forward to it.

What textbook are you going to be using? I am using Microbiology: With Diseases by Taxonomy - Robert Bauman. I am picking it up tomorrow.

I think it will be a great semester! :yeah:

Specializes in Psychiatry.

Alright.... did anyone else have to do the anal swab lab?

SwampCat, So, how did that go?

WOW, that begs so many questions ... :D

Specializes in Psychiatry.

Seriously? No one else had to do this?

We doubled up our urogenital and digestive labs last week. So everyone headed for the bathrooms with our sterile swab, tomato juice agar, MacConkey agar and a urine cup. It was pretty funny. For the urogenital lab we had to do a clean catch with the urine and then bring it back into the lab (yes, we had to walk through the hallways to get back to the classroom carrying a cup of urine, but at least we could culture the fecal bacteria in the bathroom) and culture it on MacConkey agar and blood agar, after 48 hrs we had to look for hemolysis and then count the cfu's and determine if there is an infection present. For the digestive lab we had to stick a sterile swab into our orifice  (she had written 4 inches on the board... but thank god that was just a joke!) and culture it on tomato juice agar and MacConkey agar. After 48 hours we inspected our grown fecal bacteria and inoculated part of the colonies from the MacConkey to a triple sugar iron slant which we will look at tonight.

My husband was completely freaked out when I came home and told him what I did in class. He said he would have just taken an F on that lab report.

Tonight we finish up that lab and the final exam is next Monday! I really enjoyed this class, and I'm going to miss it!

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

I've started a thread for those of us taking micro over the summer!

my final exam is on wednesday i can't wait to get it over with! i am going in with a 95.75% so hopefully i will hold onto my A.

Paco,

I know what you mean about the specific disease chapter that one was a killer, although there was a girl in my class who is an LPN and she told me to learn that chapter well because it is revisited in nursing school! good luck everyone with finishing up!

there is now lemonade all over my keyboard, thanks for the insane visual and now i will be laughing myself to sleep :D ... but seriously, that sounds like a fun lab. in my school, we used fake blood and fake anti-a/anti-b to blood type! the only most exciting body fluid we got to work with was our own saliva for the snyder's test :p

It certainly was an interesting lab to say the least!

We also had done our own throat cultures (gagtastic!) and swabs taken from various parts of our bodies. My elbow had some awesome gram neg rods on it!
