One Louisiana hospital has started offering a new car to nurses who agree to work the night and weekend shifts for three years.

I would be happy with raise. All the prn, contract, and agency nurses are making about $5-10/hr more than I am. I keep thinking our hospital will pick up the pace, but nothing so far.

How much you want to bet the hospital gets a deal on leasing all these cars & can make below-minimum payments so that at the end of 3 yrs, the RN gets stuck owing a good chunk of the balance?

Even a free car for a few years isnt enough to get a lot of us to put our lives, licenses, & pt's lives on the line by working in the conditions of some of these hell holes. When are they going to face that?

Forget the gimmicks & FIX THE CONDITIONS!

WHEN ARE 'THEY' GOING TO GET THE MESSAGE THAT WE DON'T WANT THEIR 'GIFTS' THAT COST US TO BE THEIR EMPLOYEE.......WE WANT A HEFTY PAYCHECK AND RESPECT....AND A LOWER PATIENT/NURSE RATIO! THEY'RE STILL NOT LISTENING TO US, ARE THEY!!! :angryfire

Well said, once again, cheerfuldoer and jt. Surprised it's not a Yugo.

renee and jt, well said.

however, as long as a few accept offers such as a this, they will not hear nurses and provide what is needed to keep and attract nurses.

i would not be quick to say yes to any offer such as this and i know it would be a resounding no for a 2002 saturn!

Boy...this offer sucks! I remember a hospital in CA. was offering cars in the early 80's. But it was a leased car, and was a one year deal! You paid only for the miles you logged outside of driving to and from the hospital! But this one is definitely not worth giving 3yrs on nites, working weekends! :p

Nope I'm sure a pay raise is a much better incentive.

I'd rather get more money and buy my own car Thank You Very Much.

I don't know about you guys, but I've been checking out advertisements and job postings so I know what I'm looking for when I finally graduate. And whenever I see or hear about a facility that's offering a "gimmick" to get people to work there it usually makes me want to run away from there, not towards it.

I figure if they need a gimick to get people through the door then there is a reason people are not working there.

Colleen10, you are wise before your time. They expect all the new grads to be bright-eyed and busy tailed and answer "Yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir," to their every suggestion and request, smiling like a cheerleader all the while.

All this recruitment for nurses who only stay the minimum.

Retention, retraining returning nurses, respect, safe staffing, and a retirement plan not ties to the stock market.

That is what I want.

No more going home to cry because I didn't have the time for my patients.

Well, I smirk and nod my head side to side. I would have no additional interest in receiving an automobile. If "They" offered me extra time to arrive at work to shower, and more refrigerators and activities, then my interest would spark. I can think of better things to offer an RN in an attempt to lure or coax "Them" into working then to sit still in a thin metal/glass box. I'm sorry :-(
