Keeping Nursing Textbooks...???

Published

Just had a quick question for all you new nurses...I'm starting work as a nurse on April 23rd, and was wondering how many of you kept your old nursing textbooks....I am in the process of selling my maternity, peds, and psych books on ebay, but i wasnt sure if I needed to hold onto my fundamentals and med surg texts...Do any of you new nurses use them anymore?? Thanks for your help!!

I got rid of all of my books and I haven't needed them.

You might consider keeping those texts for a bit, in case a new job opportunity comes along in such areas. Or, you may get a pregnant pt. where you are now, and it certainly helps to review the physical and psychological and family dynamics of the pregnant woman.

I kept mine for a few years as references. I even have some of my fundy notes from nursing school to look back on. Was reminded to use coke to unplug a feeding tube :)

I'm starting work on a surgical rehabilitation floor...I know that I don't want to work in Peds or Pych (ever!!)...One day I might look into Maternity, but I don't think I'm ready for that yet....I just want to get my feet wet on a med surg floor...And I also remember the coke trick...I thought my clinical instructor was crazy...lol

I kept mine, but you probably don't need to. There are plenty of places to check things out on the internet.

why get rid of it. unless you master the whole book content i'll keep it. my med surg book is my bible i never get rid of it because i dont know it all and i never will

Hey, if Coke will dissolve a nail, it should have no problem eating its way through some clumped-up tube-feed/med residue!

:lol2:

keep the funds and med surg, and if you're thinking about working in OB, keep the OB book... if you're not interested in psych, then sell it... Better than collecting dust lol

I would keep them. You might need to refer back to them.

I kept mine & I'm glad I did since I made the decision to go back for my BSN. May need to ref back...never can tell! :p

I kept mine, but I have only used my med-surg, drug book, amd medical dictionary. Sometimes when I get home from work I need to look something up and it is a good reference!

I only kept those that I felt would be good resource books... my EKG interpretation book, an IV therapy book, drug guide, Taber's, and a skills book.

I have found it helpful to flip through the skills book now and then to refresh my memory on procedures we don't do very often.
