Just had a quick question for all you new nurses...I'm starting work as a nurse on April 23rd, and was wondering how many of you kept your old nursing textbooks....I am in the process of selling my maternity, peds, and psych books on ebay, but i wasnt sure if I needed to hold onto my fundamentals and med surg texts...Do any of you new nurses use them anymore?? Thanks for your help!!
If you are going into a particular specialty such as psych., wouldn't hurt. Even the med/surge are great references when you come home questioning some part of your day.
Though, I must say, due to the lightning speed of medical advances, there is a good chance that your books may be outdated after a couple of years.
Something to think about ...

i'm a book junkie, so i'll never get rid of them :)
I'm like you. Can't get rid of them. I was an enrolled nurse for years and have collected a few books on the way. Perhaps I should get rid of some, but then I will regret doing it when I want to look up something. I wiped all my assignments and articles I had gleaned from databases off my computer: I have regretted it sincerely.
Yeah, I kept a few of mine too. Mostly general or specialty nursing type ones. The non-nursing, or less used ones like psych, writing courses, A&P, etc are gone.
Before you toss 'em, consider this. Years ago, I was cleaning out the basement and came across some of my mom's old nursing text book from the 40's.
They had things like care of a pt in an iron lung, etc.
I pitched 'em! DUH!!! I really wish I still had them now as a keep sake.
