  1. I just started my 5th week on the floor...It really isn't that bad... The first day I followed the other nurse around and completely observed The second day I did morning assessments and filled out flow sheets The third day I administered medications The fourth day I wrote progress notes Etc... Every day you will pick up one more thing...Don't try to do everything at once!! Go in there confident and it will all fall into place!!! Nursing is hard, but not brain surgery!!!! You passed nursing school and you passed the boards, so now its time to apply everything you KNOW into real life...(And a palm pilot helps lol) And don't be afraid to ASK QUESTIONS!!!
  2. I agree...take the time to RELAX!! Enjoy your summer, catch up with friends...I graduated in January, took the boards in March and started working about a month ago...Believe me...Enjoy the free time while you can!! And it will be a super plus that you already know the floor and staff!!
  3. I live in Staten Island (borough of New York City) and it was hard to find a job too...I had to take a float position after a month of trying to find SOMETHING...My recruiter said that she's never been so swamped with resumes...??? But, they are looking for CNA's...Apparently there is a storage here in NYC...But at least I have my foot in the door, and hopefully will make some friends to get the good floors (let's face it...that's how it works)
  4. When I first applied for a job as an RN, I told the nurse recruiter how I wanted to get into CCU/ICU, and she absolutly talked me out of it. She said that it is such a stressful environment as is, and a new graduate would go crazy there. Or maybe the nurses are jealous that you came on the floor as a new graduate...who knows!! Maybe starting on a regular med surg floor would've been an easier transition...The recruiter also told me about a few nurses that started in ICU, Maternity and such and have come back to her b/c they weren't ready. You have to be honest with your management and you shouldn't stress yourself out, especially as a new nurse!!!!!
  5. I was just hired yesterday to work as a float nurse, overnight shift, from 7pm to 7am....How did everyone train their body to stay up for the overnight shift??? Thank you for your help!!!!
  6. I'm starting work on a surgical rehabilitation floor...I know that I don't want to work in Peds or Pych (ever!!)...One day I might look into Maternity, but I don't think I'm ready for that yet....I just want to get my feet wet on a med surg floor...And I also remember the coke trick...I thought my clinical instructor was crazy...lol
  7. Just had a quick question for all you new nurses...I'm starting work as a nurse on April 23rd, and was wondering how many of you kept your old nursing textbooks....I am in the process of selling my maternity, peds, and psych books on ebay, but i wasnt sure if I needed to hold onto my fundamentals and med surg texts...Do any of you new nurses use them anymore?? Thanks for your help!!
  8. Sorry it took me so long to get back...I jumped on a plane for Cozumel on Thursday, and found out on my connecting flight that I PASSED!!!!!!!
  9. Ok, so I took the NCLEX today...Machine shut off at 100 questions...I honestly have NO idea how I did, but I know that is the norm...I studied really hard and feel as though alot of the information on the boards weren't really in the study materials I used. ( I used the Lipincott and Saunders books) There were no lab values, drug administration, maternity, cardiac, respiratory...things I studied lol...There were ALOT of prioritizing, a few questions where I had to put certian patients into rooms together, who would I discharge first...I hope I did ok, I'll let everyone know when I get my results...Good luck to anyone taking the boards!!!!!
