  1. well thanks everyone! I ended up moving back to the Bay area where I got a new grad job in the ICU making more money. Thats the specialty area I wanted anyway. All the nurse recruiters in Boston told me they wouldn't be hiring till early next year and some told me out right to move out of Boston. On top of this the person I moved for completely bailed on me when I got to Boston....So I happily went back to the bay area. I found it really shocking that the cost of living in Boston is equal to the bay area, yet nurses are paid about half what they are paid in the Bay area. Thanks for everyones help and words of encouragement.
  2. The above website is with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. You have to register to read about SBAR, but it is free to register. Hope this helps!!!!
  3. http://www.ihi.org/IHI/Topics/PatientSafety/SafetyGeneral/Tools/SBARTechniqueforCommunicationASituationalBriefingModel.htm A nice RN gave me this link when I started a topic "How to talk to Doctors". It talks about SBAR and then I gave a short presentation on it in class.
  4. In the spring/early summer John Muir Concord had a hiring freeze for new grads. This may change but you should check. John Muir Walnut Creek may be a different story.
  5. Guys , I am in the same boat. I just moved here from CA as a May 2007 new grad. I have my MA license but cant find anything. Most recruiters are telling me that they wont hire until next year/late this fall. I am interviewing with Spaulding Rehab center tomorrow. I am thinking about moving back to CA. In CA it is hard to find a job but not this hard. I have called or applied to over 25 hospitals. It seems like there is nothing. I did get a call from someone about being a school nurse, but kids arent my thing. If one more person asks me why I cant get a job because "there is a nursing shortage" I swear I am going to scream. Anyway, we have to keep our heads up and just keep going. We are awesome and we would be an asset to any hospital that would hire us.:balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons::balloons:
  6. I would look elsewhere. The school has great reputation but the absn program is unorganized. very unorganized. they dont help you with career assistance. Last years SF class didnt even have a building and were actually in oakland for the first five months. No one is in charge and problems are basically ignored. Also because the program is acclerated you do not get to do a summer externship, work as a CNA or help with a professor's research to build your resume. I would go for the other school, but if you do chose this school I would make the best of this and expect total chaos.
  7. Does anyone know how a california nurse moving to KY can work as a nursing assistant unti her license tranfers?
  8. My advice to you is to start working as a nursing assistant as soon as possible to build your resume. Try to do nurse externships, paid nursing student gigs, during the summer when you dont have class. Contact hospitals where you want to work nine months before you graduate to see about positions. This is at least what people are doing here in the Bay area. Congrats on choosing nursing! You have chosen wisely...... I am a new grad and although the market in my area is competative I still have no regrets about nursing. Its the best decision I ever made.
  9. They arent organized well enough to blackball you. Were you a shift supervisor for nursing or in a prior career?
  10. This is exactly how I feel. Our program was a short intensive 2nd bachelor's program which allowed no time for outside employment at a Hospital to gain experience. Now we are all graduating with no experience and being told that congratulations you have a bsn but still we wont hire you.
  11. Are nursing internship programs the same thing as new graduate programs?
  12. I like that Edwards has brought us back to the discussion on poverty. I'd like to learn more about his views on healthcare.
  13. It's good to hear I'm not the only one out there. I have falled in "love" with the ICU but as a new comer realize and am open to working Med/Surg with the hopes of eventually getting a job in the ICU. But even those positions are very competative. Being in northern california I am finding more job openings in southern california. Boston, where I am trying to relocate, sounds alot like northern california for job opening for new grads, as in not many. I wonder why the south seems to have more openings for new grads? It seems like the coasts, with more dense populations, would have more openings to meet the demand of the population. It seems that when the media or whomever states that there is a nursing shortage that they should be more specific. For instance the Bay area market is saturated with NP's. So saying there is a nursing shortage over the entire country seems to be misleading when the shortage seems to be only in certain pockets. I also am starting to notice that maybe the "nursing shortage" maybe doesnt refer to new comers as much as more experienced nurses. For example, the hospital where I am precepting says they want to take more new grads but they cant because they already have so many new nurses on the floor. The feel that they cant balance the overall level of experience on the floor to meet the learning demands of the new nurses and to make sure everyone is safe. So there is an issue of balancing out the total experience of all nurses on the ICU.
  14. I looked at Rudy Guiliani and John McCain's websites and neither list healthcare as an issue on their website otherwise I would have posted some republican links. I'll look for more candidates and post later.
