Application Meeting WCCCD
Good luck to all of you. When I applied, there were over 300 people and that was two years ago. Don't sweat the GPA thing too much, and you might want to read the student nurse forum on this allnurses. I remember those days when the 4.0 people bragged and bragged, and to be honest with you, I am about to graduate from nursing school and I got in with a 3.35. I am successful with nursing school, and it requires a lot of hard work and determination. Nursing school is tough. You do not have to have a perfect score on everything in pre req's to become a good nurse. Once in the program, you will have to work your behind off and studying becomes your life. You will breathe, eat and sleep nursing school. Some 4.0 students went down to C students, remember this..without saying anything too negative about the GPA thing, common sense far outweighs any book smart person any day. It is good to know both, but common sense is really important. Some people can really score high grades, but in the clinical setting they are lost..you have to be able to apply both theory and common sense to your patient's care. I wish you lot's of luck on your journey, and stay busy, to keep your mind of that letter and that mail delivery person...keep your chin up and work hard once you get in. Your batch of students has one advantage over ours. The 12 credit policy, I love it. Those transfer students were taking our spots, so now the college is making our students a preference, which it should. Before, the 12 credits taken at WCCCD policy, we had all kinds of University students applying next to us, and some of them beat us out of a spot. So you have an advantage now. I wish you all the best.:nuke:

Wcccd Campus
I am a Senior Nursing student with one semester to go, graduating in December and this is my 4th year at WCCCD. I started out slow with my pre-req's and built up to four classes a semester, as I was 38 when I went back to college. Each person has a preference for which campus they like best. I was always biased to Western, as I grew up very close by there, and I absolutely hate the N.W. campus. It is in ill repair, broken windows, it floods frequently, there are shady characters roaming around campus, including homeless people, and one nursing student had all four wheels stolen off of her truck in the parking lot, during the day. To each their own though, and we will be in a new campus come fall, at the old U of D Mercy campus on Southfield and Joy Road. I wish you the best of luck and enjoy your experience in school. I am happy that I will soon be out of there and working as a RN. Have a great summer.

Attn: All Registered Nurses
Hi Rn07, I understood what you meant, and I am a student. I will be doing my Peds rotation at St. John's and know nothing about the hospital. I will be graduating in December, and I was wanting to ask you how you liked it there. Did you know where you wanted to work upon graduation? I am confused on which hospital to go to, there are so many around here. The DMC (Harper,Hutzel, Karmanos) is where most of my training has been, and they have asked if we would be interested in working for them. Good luck to you and I will be nosy and read what the RN's are saying on this thread, you are right, you hardly ever see RN's posting on here, mostly students.

How do you deal with Non-Urgent Patients
i do not have a "i'll be a better nurse than you" attitude, and i understand humor and dealing with stress, and no, i do not believe anyone literally let's a patient "rot" in the waiting area. i was floored by the comment, that is all. i live outside of detroit, and at our local community hospital, everyone has been so kind and nice, when i have had to take a family member to the er. sometimes, i think people forget how many americans are without health insurance, last i heard it was around 50 million??

What's the best RN to BSN program? EMU or OU
Thanks for sharing your experience. I have my application online for the Nurse Tech position, but no calls so far. Some hospitals offer the RN to BSN through their hospital and pay up to 80 % of your tuition. Did you look in to that with your employer? I know Oakwood does it, and I think a few others do too. That might be an option. I am glad your first year went by fast. I am so excited to start mine. Life outside of school? I can't even imagine right now, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am anxious about taking those boards too. Well, I wish you the best of luck in finding a program that is right for you. I was just looking at U of M Nursing School, and they have the RN to BSN to MSN program, that sounded interesting. You can go on their website and request info be sent to you. Madonna has a similar program too. Have a great weekend.

What's the best RN to BSN program? EMU or OU
I am interested in this question too, I will be graduating in December. Can I ask you how your first year went as a new nurse? I am getting anxious. How were boards? Everything is coming at me really fast, and I will be doing my last semester starting this August, the reality of going out on my own is kind of scary, yet exciting as well. Did you have these feelings too? Nice screen name by the way.

How do you deal with Non-Urgent Patients
Oh my goodness!!! I am soon to be a Grad Nurse, switching careers in midlife, and I wouldn't ever want your attitude. "Let them rot"? good God almighty, you need to switch departments or careers. I can't believe there are nurses out there with this attitude. I certainly would NOT want you, or anyone with this attitude touching any of my family members.

Padded Rooms??!
I am a nursing student on the Psych Unit at a local hospital, and yes we have several padded rooms there. The doors are not allowed to be locked as it is against Michigan law, according to my Instructor, and she works there on weekends. There is a crisis ER for Mental Health and we took a tour of that, 6 rooms, and two padded rooms in that area also. They call them "quiet" rooms and there is a sitter who sits outside of the door. Patients can also go in there if the Unit is too noisy for them, and they want to be in a quiet area. I have seen two patients placed in those rooms, after they attacked staff and were very aggressive. One pt. stayed in there for around 6 hours and was released back on to the unit, he was also medicated as well. Hope that helps.

Oakwood Hospital-Good or Bad?
I had to post, after all I am doing my Psych clinicals at Heritage and the staff there are terrific. Everyone has a different perception of things and I have learned this in school as well. Someone might say a certain teacher is awesome, and I ended up not very impressed with that teacher at all. On the Mental Health Unit, everyone is very accommodating to the nursing students, and my Instructor works weekends at Heritage and she is great!! Wishing you the best of luck, as I want to work at Oakwood myself.

Can you believe how fast our first year went by...I am hoping the second year goes by just as fast, if not quicker...YAY...getting excited for Psych..how about u?

All Wcccd Nursing Students
Sorry I haven't gotten on here in a while. I have been busy during our break. Yes, it would only be 20 dollars to join if our school has a chapter. Our school did have a membership a few years ago, but it fell by the wayside, and my enthusiasm for trying to push this through has as well. I met with lack of support from the office, from some student's,... all though on here the support has been great... Maybe one of the first year students would like to vote a president and a council and get it going?? I have the materials that tell you how. I met a roadblock with trying to get it going...and I don't have time to do it all myself, nor do I want to do all by myself...We can join on our own as well, and that may be what I end up doing. Let me know what you all think. Like I said, some people said they were game for it, and other's were not. I don't have time to try and get council members and vote on a president, and I sure don't want to be the president..so maybe you first year students can get that part together. I don't know...it sounded good to me, but the staff and some of the students were not in to it...so I kind of lost my drive for it..I can see why it fell by the wayside...

How clinicals work
I know a few people who failed trying to work full time... I know one who successfully does both...it's a load being in nursing school, but only you will know that answer, when you cross that bridge..

Any DMC nurses out there?
It does help, and thank you!! One of my fellow classmates just hired on at Harper as a student nurse, she said she is learning many skills, it sounds great. I applied for a position, the only one open on their website, at Detroit Receiving in the ER as a student nurse.. I am waiting to hear back from them.. Have a great new year.. p.s. that chest tube on the floor sounds awesome, you must have been pretty hyped about it..
