The wonderful thing about nursing is that it is open to everyone of all ages. Please give a cheer to all the people who believe that age is not a factor in learning. And, to all the people who strive for knowledge regardless of age. How old were you when you started nursing school?

I was a few months short of being 41. I am going to school to be an LPN and then I will see if I still want to bridge over to be an RN. I have thought about nursing since I was a teenager but I didn't want to do the work my first time around in college...I went for art too...paper making was so much less stressful than A&P. Anyway..life got in the way..got married..had a baby..raised my child..military family....then life made some choices for me and I decided it was the right time to be a nurse. I am glad I waited because I am much more focused and mature than I was in my party years...I would not have made it through way back in the day.
I was 36 when I started. Be 38 when I graduate with ASN in May. An additional year to bridge to BSN.
I wanted to be a nurse when I was in high school. Even did a short stint as a candy striper. (Do they even have those anymore?) I looked into the program, and the very rigorous requirements scared me into worrying I wouldn't be able to do it. So I spent 4 years in school to get a Social Work degree. During the last semester, I finally admitted I didn't want that, so I dropped out. That was an adventure in itself, dealing with family insisting I not waste my life and finish that last semester. I didn't, and spent the next couple of years as a house wife. Then my kids along, and while staying home with them, I realized I could handle anything that nursing school would throw at me. So I waited until my youngest started elementary school to start. I would have loved to have started at 18, but I probably would not have had the determination or self confidence to finish.

Thanks. I'm trying to prove you can teach an old dog new tricks. I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I just turned 54, have been an RN for 33 years and hope to work another 20.
I've witnessed so many changes in nursing and medicine during my career. The best part about nursing is that we continue to learn new things each and every day that can influence others and change lives. What other profession can say that?
Good luck to you on your MSN journey!
