Hello all! I am just curious as to how far you guys commute to your jobs. I am a new grad and I am trying to determine how far is "too far" as I continue my job search.
I live in a rural area in a county without it's own hospital. Not too many nursing jobs except for the health dept, 1 LTC & 1 ALF. I drive 26 miles, 30 minutes from my driveway to parking lot for my job. Have to watch out for slow moving farm equipment at times (& deers!) but traffic is otherwise good.
I have a 22 minute commute, which is almost half of what I used to drive. My old commute was 40 minutes. Both in rural areas so very little traffic to deal with. That 15 minutes makes a huge difference. I don't feel like I'm wasting my work days driving so much and I don't have to get gas as often.
My commute fro 14 years was 5 minutes to a LTC where I was able to come and go as I please. I loved my staff and patients trust me it can wear old after a while. But after 14 years - on call 24/7, supervising direct care staff and nurses, I had reached my plateau and wanted a change. Short commute and state pay. So I decided it was time for a change. I'm at the VA - 1 hour commute, federal pay, go home not on call - FABULOUS BLESSING!! I should have done this a long time ago!. Yes I commute 1 hour but that's MY time! I really enjoy it too! I was always at a rush before and never time for me or my family. With the 5 minute commute, guess who was always called on to check on things? ME of course and I would go each and every time. So for me, my new job, I love it and the veterans are wonderful to work with and I am grateful every day!! My hour is a blessing compared to the 5 minute commute I did for 14 years because I go to a job I love!!

I work at a clinic about 10 miles away from home. In California that means 30-45 minutes. It's not too bad, but if I could move my family and home right next door to work, I would.
