How long is your commute?

Published

Hello all! I am just curious as to how far you guys commute to your jobs. I am a new grad and I am trying to determine how far is "too far" as I continue my job search.

Specializes in Pediatrics/Developmental Pediatrics/Research/psych.

I commuted 1:45 for my school nurse job. I just got a new job in a psych unit at a hospital. The commute will take almost 2 hours.

I got to pay the bills...

Specializes in General adult inpatient psychiatry.

31 minutes without traffic, 45ish between traffic and parking and walking to my building. 27 miles of almost 100% highway driving.

Specializes in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgical.

Around 20-25 min bike ride for my full time job, 15-60 min depending on the others. Sometimes I'm asked to cover at the other office, and that can be over an hour, 15 minutes, but that's rare.

Specializes in orthopedic/trauma, Informatics, diabetes.

Current job 45 min. Last job 60 min. This one is 3 days a week, last one was 5 days a week. Do what you have to get work. Got y dream job now :)

Specializes in mental health / psychiatic nursing.

Current job ~30 minutes depending on traffic. It's further away than my previous job and in inclement weather can easily take 2+ hours but is well worth it.

53 miles/ 1 hour. I'm a new grad in a bad market; it's a means to an end. Better opportunities will come with time and experience!

Specializes in ER/Tele, Med-Surg, Faculty, Urgent Care.

In the past, I lived in Fredericksburg VA & Baltimore, stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1990's, took 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic.

Now longest commute is 18 miles, 15 minutes, shortest to urgent care is 3 miles, ten minutes if I get all the green lights.

Specializes in geriatrics.

My longest commute was 50 minutes. Anything more than that and I relocate. I detest any sort of commute because I don't enjoy driving. Currently, I walk which takes 20 minutes.

My commute to work? In the mornings it's generally about 10, maybe 15 minutes. Home from work it's 15-45 minutes depending on traffic (unfortunately the roads I take home from work can either be really busy or really not busy :( ). Door to door when I'm on call and going to work in the middle of the night? Last time it took me 12 minutes including the walk from the parking garage and in to my work unit.

I worked a previous job with a 75 mile / 65 minute commute to/from work. Nearly all interstate in an area where there was rarely traffic that really cause slow downs. I hated the commute, it really really sucked when you worked 12s, particularly when you were mandated to 16. I've also worked with a 5 minute drive to work catching every red light in the town between my home and work.

I traveled to nursing school one hour each way. And I don't think the drive is worth it.

It was 5-15 min for years but I've increased it to 35 min for a career opportunity. I can do almost anything with a reasonable end date especially if it's a means to an end that I really want.

Specializes in ICU, trauma.

I have actually been wanting to ask the same thing! I have accepted a job in Reno, and I really want to move in with my boyfriend in South Lake Tahoe. The commute would be around an hour, but that's without snow. I don't know if it will be worth it once it stars snowing, I am thinking of getting a small one bedroom closer to work, especially since I will be working 12 hour night shifts :-/
