Have noticed racist threads right here in the past two days!

Published

I have noticed in the past two days that people are posting threads that are directly angry at the Filipino nurses..simply they are getting the jobs from us!

Well, I have seen nurses coming from Canada, U.K., Mexico and Eastern Europe as well; and it seems to me most of you don't want to mention this. Is that mean nurses from Canada, and U.K. are treated differently?

I could like to point out the Filipino nurses just like many others; they are educated, having strong sense of being team players and working hard just like many of us...Most of all, they are very committed and their overturn rate is relatively low. When it comes to the overturn rate, the management will consider it as a way of saving money! I have seen many U.S. educated nurses will quit their jobs or they just disappeared somewhere... Do I want to work with nurses like that...Of course, I don't! I have been assigned to four patients in the Med/Surg ICU inasmuch as some nurses just called in sick! They are so irresponsible! They jeopardize the patient's lives and my license! It is a mystery for them to become nurses in the first place.

When you look back, this country is indeed built on racism! Look at the African Americans...and I have just proved my point! Has anyone of us recalled there was a vice president who could not even spell the word "potato?" Unfortunately, history always repeats itself and if you have the right skin color, it does not matter whether you can spell some simple words or not....and you will get the job!

At the end, I would rather work with people who are very committed to their work and have the disciplines to go to work when they are supposed to go to work!

I'm not going to read all this thread, but I have noticed "team players" meant only "their team" in the only place I have worked with Filipino nurses. My experience is not a blanket statement to all Filipino nurses. A multicultural workplace can be both a pain and wonderful at the same time.

25$/hr in the state with the highest cost of living ain't much...

Heck, that's only a few dollars away from me and I'm still a CNA. ;)

It depends on where you live. If you lived in Mid-Town, Upper East and Upper West, you were right about it! However, there are a lot of places that are not so expensive to live in New York. I could like to say an LPN with $25/hr plus benefits is pretty good, if he/she does not live in an expensive areas that I just mentioned.

One last comment then I have homework to do!!!!!

If a thread is racist, or even slightly racist, the moderators will shut it down immediately!

This thread has bounced around from foreigners to racism to wages in NYC. What exactly is the point with this thread? I sense so much anger and resentment from the OP, and why? Honestly, I dont care what anyone makes in NYC or Wisconsin for that matter...I dont live there and dont care. That has nothing to do with the original intent of this thread, so why did you bring that up? I think this thread has gotten out of hand. I think the OP needs someone to talk with or counselling to help in dealing with the hostility exerted on here, it makes me wonder the attitude in real life. We all are nurses, who live in a world all of our own. We need to be supportive of each other. This site isnt for bashing everyone's opinion or culture or skin color. Just my 2 cents.

The 'their team' comment reminds me how frustrating it was working in a large Houston hospital with a lot of Filipino's. Once a month a sheet of hard to fill shifts would come out and we were all supposed to get a fair chance to sign up. (These shifts came with a $220.00 bonus.) But there was a team thing going on---Any Filipino who was on when the premium bonus shift came out called all other Filipino's and the sheet would be filled before me and the one other American RN could get a chance at the bonus money.

Op may need a dictionary before using "racist" in a header. I'll add that I'm white and the only other American RN at said hospital was black. Like others said it's about money and the economy not racism.

I do not think it is racism at all. It is NOT ABOUT RACE! THE ISSUE IS (Jeez some people GET OUT OF CONTROL when a certain race is pointed out in an example and do not see the whole picture!!..) Anyways.. the issue is that the US is in a major economic crisis right now.. people w/o jobs.. hiring freezes... foreclosures.. so when a job is open... I believe it is in the best interest to help out the citizens in the US and give them the job opportunity FIRST before importing someone from another country.. ITS NOT DIRECTED at people of other races.. (some people love being "the victim." I see nothing positive at this time of hiring and bringing someone in outside of the country when there are citizens right here who need that job first. I understand if hospitals can't find anyone for the job so they look internationally but right now..YEAH RIGHT!!

I've never worked with a Filipino nurse, so wouldn't even begin to know how to generalize against them based on skin color or anything else.

You, however, seem to have no trouble painting all American nurses with a broad brush. Skip the colloquialisms too - when used incorrectly they aren't beneficial to getting your (often hard to follow) point across, they are just confusing. So no, we "do not just prove the point!"

There are NO foreign nurses immigrating to the US to work at this moment in time, Retrogression has stopped this.

The problem with this country at the moment is financial not because of the 3.5% of the nursing population who happen to be immigrants.

Think about it 3.5% of nurses are foreign that leaves 96.5% of working nurses in the US who are from the USA!!!!!!

Thank you!

No, I am not Filipino!

I am so agree with you and foreign nurses will bring the wages down! But are you aware of that fact that Canadian and British nurses do not make as much as the the nurses in the U.S.? Don't you think they will bring down the wages as well!

Of course, and again, I am totally against foreign nurses when it comes to my salary! But this is not the reason why I bring out the argument! My argument is based on justices which have not been served in this case!

I am Filipino who has been perusing most of the threads in allnurses for the last few weeks and the "racism" you mentioned is definitely nonexistent. Yes, I have to agree that Filipino nurses had been mentioned in few threads especially when it comes to importation of foreign nurses but I didn't feel/read that nationalist is present.

Thank you!

As I said, I am strongly disagree with the foreign nurses especially in this economic crisis which will be over anyway. But I am also disagree with all those nurses who are irresponsible...I guess they have forgotten why they wanna to become nurses in the first place! In the ICU, Filipino nurses seem to be more reliable! If I see their names, I know they will show up and this matters the most![/quot

I strongly disagree with this statement. Lpn2icu, did you even consider that maybe those "reliable" Filipino nurses you were referring to were born, raised, or educated in the U.S? I sense so much anger and umbrage to your posts and comments to other people, maybe you should start taking that well-deserve day off and start thinking of anger management class.

Trust me on this, it will tremendously help you to stay sane:yeah::yeah::yeah:

Wow! The title to this thread shocked me, but the OP's allegations shocked me even more. I am an American citizen, however, I was not born or raised here. I am a foreigner. I did however, go to college here and did not even dream of becoming an RN until I had moved here. So, let's remember that when we talk about the effect of foreign nurses (and foreigners in general) taking American jobs in today's economy, it is not really a matter of people that come to this country to move for whatever reason, but it is an issue of foreign nurses migrating to the USA solely for the purpose of getting those scarce jobs that are available (I know way too many new grads (licensed RN's) working as CNA's. It's sad.)

Look at it this way, if you are a mother of 6 and are struggling feeding your children, why on earth would you want to adopt an orphan? It's called common sense, not racism!

I don't see it as racism at all.

Every country, EVERY country, no matter if it's the US, Canada, Mexico...it doesn't matter where you live...a country's FIRST obligation is for the protection of employment and well-being of it's current, legal, citizens, no matter WHAT race or ethnicity they are.

To me, that takes priority over those with a work Visa. I have no issue with those having a Visa being given work, but not at the expense of permanent, legal, full naural born or naturalized citizens of the USA.

Sorry if this is an unpopular post, but to me, it's not a racism issue.
