I have noticed in the past two days that people are posting threads that are directly angry at the Filipino nurses..simply they are getting the jobs from us!
Well, I have seen nurses coming from Canada, U.K., Mexico and Eastern Europe as well; and it seems to me most of you don't want to mention this. Is that mean nurses from Canada, and U.K. are treated differently?
I could like to point out the Filipino nurses just like many others; they are educated, having strong sense of being team players and working hard just like many of us...Most of all, they are very committed and their overturn rate is relatively low. When it comes to the overturn rate, the management will consider it as a way of saving money! I have seen many U.S. educated nurses will quit their jobs or they just disappeared somewhere... Do I want to work with nurses like that...Of course, I don't! I have been assigned to four patients in the Med/Surg ICU inasmuch as some nurses just called in sick! They are so irresponsible! They jeopardize the patient's lives and my license! It is a mystery for them to become nurses in the first place.
When you look back, this country is indeed built on racism! Look at the African Americans...and I have just proved my point! Has anyone of us recalled there was a vice president who could not even spell the word "potato?" Unfortunately, history always repeats itself and if you have the right skin color, it does not matter whether you can spell some simple words or not....and you will get the job!
At the end, I would rather work with people who are very committed to their work and have the disciplines to go to work when they are supposed to go to work!

I agree it seems racist to point out the Filipino Nurses. And, yes, our VP couldn't spell. However, at this time, when we are having trouble finding jobs for citizens of this country, I feel that importing Nurses from other countries is a big problem and would naturally cause anger in people that are usually not racist.
Americans have come along way in thier thinking towards people who migrate looking for a better life. It was not just the people of color who were discriminated against. Some of my family came here from Ireland, England and Germany. They were refused jobs, land, any help at all. They could not have been any whiter if they wanted to. Other people in my family were born here before the English settled on this land. They were chased off thier land and in some cases killed, because they were in the way of the countries progress.
I do have to also agree that I would rather work with people who are very committed to thier work & show up when scheduled. But I hope I would be one of those people who would be understanding when illness & other emergencies happen.

So nurses are irresponsible when they call in sick. Wouldn't it be the other way around, that you are irresponsible when you go TO work sick?
How about they call in sick when they are not sick? Nurses are given the sick days and some of them are very abusive when it comes to these days!

Not racist threads, I haven't noticed any threads demeaning them because of the color of their skin. I have noted threads against their nationality which is an entirely different prejudice. People are angry and upset and note that an increased amount of nurses immigrate from the Philliphines and coming from a third world nations, these nurses are more apt to tolerate working conditions that would not be tolerated from those coming from more affluent nations so actually their nationality does differ them from the immigrant groups you mention.

People having issues with foreign nurses taking jobs in the USA is not racism. Prejudice maybe, but not racism. I can tell you, as the lone white male out of 200 female nurses, most of them Filipina, managed by a Filipino, that preference is usually shown to the Filipina nurses. I can barely get a week vacation in, but someone wants to go to the Philippines for a month? No problem. Do I say anything? Only when I don't get my due...like my share of weekends and vacations....but it happens.
Sick days where I work can be used for the care of sick relatives, as well as personal illness. I have taken sick days when I physically couldn't come to work. Some of us need a mental health day. I am given 12 sick days a year, and I believe in using them to promote my mental and physical health as well as recover from illness.
Sure it causes an inconvenience to other staff sometimes, but that isn't my problem. Hospitals need to staff adequately to allow for nurses being out. JMHO

There are many U.S. nurses that are not irresponsible. So please do not direct your anger at all of us. However, if a company lays off Americans to soon after hire foreign trained nurses, then that is a problem for all of us (both foreigners and Americans).
Also, you are responsible for protecting your own license. Dont blame your coworkers. :)

There are NO foreign nurses immigrating to the US to work at this moment in time, Retrogression has stopped this.
The problem with this country at the moment is financial not because of the 3.5% of the nursing population who happen to be immigrants.
Think about it 3.5% of nurses are foreign that leaves 96.5% of working nurses in the US who are from the USA!!!!!!

This post is way off, starting with the title. The desire to prevent foreign nurses from coming into the country is a NATIONALISTIC point of view, not racist. Filipino nurses were singled out because that country is churning out nurses that have been coming over here, not because the Filipino people are born inferior (That would be a racist statement). There is absolutely nothing racist about fearing foreign workers decreasing demand which then decreases our wages.
If foreign nurses flooded America demanding better pay and better conditions I would be all for it. My fears are of their sheer numbers undercutting our very tenuous position at the bargaining table with management. Think about it.

Of course, I am responsible for my license! But 4 patients in the ICU... 12 nurses were supposed to be showed up and only 6 of them did!
To those nurses in New York, remember last Monday, when there was a big snow storm; 15 nurses were supposed to show up in a skilled nursing facility and only 5 did! There were all sick during a snow storm! They all got away from "murder."

How could that not be racism? Did you forget the Canadian nurses and the British nurses? I guess I already mentioned in my thread and it seemed to me you were pretending not to see that! It is OK! You just proved my point!
By the way, I have this Filipino nurse who has been working in the ICU for the past 21 years and never has any sick days! I like to work with her inasmuch as I know I can count on her when I see her name on the schedule! Anyhow, she deserves to have a whole full month in Philippines if she chooses to do so...
Racism is against a race. Has anyone been against Filapino nurses because of the color of their skin? No...
What people are noting is the nationality so that correct term is prejudice and the specific prejudice is being exhibited is nationalist.
I really wish people could point out concerns and fears without being labled with such terms. Noting a difference in a culture is being culturally aware, demeaning someone for their culture is completely different.
