I have noticed in the past two days that people are posting threads that are directly angry at the Filipino nurses..simply they are getting the jobs from us!
Well, I have seen nurses coming from Canada, U.K., Mexico and Eastern Europe as well; and it seems to me most of you don't want to mention this. Is that mean nurses from Canada, and U.K. are treated differently?
I could like to point out the Filipino nurses just like many others; they are educated, having strong sense of being team players and working hard just like many of us...Most of all, they are very committed and their overturn rate is relatively low. When it comes to the overturn rate, the management will consider it as a way of saving money! I have seen many U.S. educated nurses will quit their jobs or they just disappeared somewhere... Do I want to work with nurses like that...Of course, I don't! I have been assigned to four patients in the Med/Surg ICU inasmuch as some nurses just called in sick! They are so irresponsible! They jeopardize the patient's lives and my license! It is a mystery for them to become nurses in the first place.
When you look back, this country is indeed built on racism! Look at the African Americans...and I have just proved my point! Has anyone of us recalled there was a vice president who could not even spell the word "potato?" Unfortunately, history always repeats itself and if you have the right skin color, it does not matter whether you can spell some simple words or not....and you will get the job!
At the end, I would rather work with people who are very committed to their work and have the disciplines to go to work when they are supposed to go to work!
Are you aware of the fact that there is a racism in America? The current situation is extreme complicated! I do agree not to import anymore foreign nurses; but not only Filipino..nurses from U.K. and Canada should not be allow at this time and you have failed to mention it even I mentioned in my thread! I guess skin color has something to do with it! Am I right or wrong?
I am a UK nurse who came here not because of wanting to work here, but because of my family. Therefore,I have to work here or be dependent on my husband/relatives for financial support, which is not how we function back in the U.K.Most UK nurses who I am aware of,came here to their family. Most of the white folks here are from Europe, which includes the U.K. I cannot see anything racist about people being concerned about the influx of philippines nurses.Back in the U.K. people were fuming about the heavy influx of philippine too.I was one of them,as I was about to finish nursing school and there were no jobs due to the amount of nurses from the philippines. This does not mean that I am racist? There are many, many more philippines nurses here than there are U.K nurses. On the other hand,U.K. nurses will not accept a position if they are not going to be paid the same as U.S nurses.Would you be happy if U.K or USA nurses should flock the philippines causing you not to get a job? Yes,racism does exist here, however, this is not a race issue,in my opinion.
What is the point of having a sick nurse on the floor? to watch you work,or to collapse in order to prove that he/she is indeed ill? From what I know, nurses should NOT be judgemental! Judging your colleague who is off sick is not a good idea. The same way you judge your colleague;you will judge your patients. You should empathize with your colleagues, not judging them.
P.S Native Americans are Indians.

I replied to this post, and I think that what the originator was trying to say was the fact she seemed to see more foreign nurses than American? I'm only trying to understand......I don't think I was being racist when I replied, these are just observatios I have withessed. I may get some flack about this comment, BUT! If we would stop worrying about who is in charge,( A BIGGIE), where did they go to school, how much,(or less) education they have,(or don't have) and get back to the business at hand- taking care of patients. We all would be better off. I love my job, I love being a nurse- I'm good at it, but the bickering really needs to stop because it hurts us ALL at the end. Other "people" see this, and number one they know we do not provide a united front, and so they come and get the jobs they think we won't do. "Not a sermon- just a thought"......
i actually can see both sides of the fence -from a patients point of view and a nurses point of view. From a nurses point of view,I have applied to almost every hospital in my area and have not been hired but I see these same hospitals with a large amount of of foreign nurses and more being sponsored.I know that they are way more educated in that more tend to have a bsn{fillipino only} Clinically they are the smartest foreign nurses i have seen. If we want to talk about foreign nurses who have no skills at all and are hard to understand, imo that would be nurses fron india{and no i am not a racist} Wnen my preemie was born in 2006, i saw a lot of american nurses regardless of color just standing there talking and guess who was attending to the babies? the fillipino nurse of course.
Of course, I am responsible for my license! But 4 patients in the ICU... 12 nurses were supposed to be showed up and only 6 of them did!To those nurses in New York, remember last Monday, when there was a big snow storm; 15 nurses were supposed to show up in a skilled nursing facility and only 5 did! There were all sick during a snow storm! They all got away from "murder."
Maybe they have school age children, and a lot of schools were closed. I fault the hospital when we have to work with a skeleton crew due to call outs and such. I know its expensive, but utilize the agency nurses when necessary instead of giving nurses unsafe patient loads. I honestly feel that a lot, but not all, of managers and department heads could care less when their nurses are overwhelmed.
I have been to a website for Filipino nurses. It didn't take me long to figure out that I didn't need to be there. The comments I read were nowhere near as nonracist as what I've read here over the past two days. The person who gets offended by the opinions expressed here can report the post or choose to go elsewhere, just like I did when I decided I would never visit that Filipino website again. Problem solved.
Hi, what is the name of that site please?
I've been on 2 nursing sites since 1999. (Had to change my log on here once because I forgot it and had a new ISP and email.) I think the term racist will get this thread deleted soon so I see no reason to waste my time posting.
It's a huge time suck for people to reply to these threads then have them deleted because someone didn't like it that another poster didn't agree with them. (The thread that had 138 replies didn't have an inflammatory word in the header yet someone must have complained and gotten it deleted. Sorry I wasted my valuable time reading it and posting. Now the term "racist" in this thread header is wrong, not being used correctly and it is offensive.)
I also have heard that Jewish are welcome without limit so many Russian nurses said they are Jewish (no DNA check), and they come to work happily. What I mean is do not aimed any foreign nurses. The nursese shortage is being exist for a long time. Why this topic wasn't discussed when the economic is hot? People always come and go follow money, not the true heart.
Racism is against a race. Has anyone been against Filapino nurses because of the color of their skin? No...What people are noting is the nationality so that correct term is prejudice and the specific prejudice is being exhibited is nationalist.
I really wish people could point out concerns and fears without being labled with such terms. Noting a difference in a culture is being culturally aware, demeaning someone for their culture is completely different.
Sorry, but you need to check out your definitions of racism, prejudice and racial prejudice.
There are many racially discriminating posts on all nurses, and often they are against "foreign" nurses not Philippino nurses,so that is also stereotyping too.
The UN does not define "racism", however it does define "racial discrimination": according to the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination,
the term "racial discrimination" shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life. '[1]
This definition does not make any difference between prosecutions based on ethnicity and race, in part because the distinction between the two remains debatable among anthropologists.[2] According to British law, racial group means "any group of people who are defined by reference to their race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin".[3]
Just noticed the thread about the NJ hospital that garnered 132 responses is gone. Why let that many people put their time into responding then suddenly delete it after 132 responses? That thread had interesting debate this one makes little sense by comparison and lpn2icu must have know how inflammatory the title is. There are offensive things said on this thread so it should also be deleted.

I don't' think the other thread that got deleted was so much racist. The OP of that thread made some excellent points about how nurses from other countries stuck together through difficult times, and that nurses in the US should do the same. I think that should apply everywhere, at any time.
But I also recall the words 'Philippine puppy mill nursing schools' used which I thought was very insensitive to our Philippino members here. Not racist as such but it was insensitive.

So we pick on the Indians now do we?:chuckle
And yes you are racist with that comment. Did your seriously think you fool us and get away with making a racist comment by ending it with 'no I'm not racist? '
Fact is, you have said that Indian nurses have 'no skills at all', their 'hard to understand'. Now according to the Oxford dictionary "racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial group possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another racial group or racial groups" .
You want to be very careful on what you say from now on and how it will be perceived by others. Please refrain from making racist remarks here.

The threads aren't racist.......yet. Even with the comments about "quality", "submissive" and "not speaking the language" they aren't quite there yet. As I stated in one thread, they are looking for someone to scapegoat and Filipino nurses are just convenient right now. I even went to the trouble of looking up some jobs and posting them(took about 8 seconds) and there were many excuses forthcoming about what was wrong with the jobs, too far, company sucks, etc. yet they don't want Filipino nurses to get the jobs either! Silly, isn't it?
I've been on this board for 8 years now and I've seen all sorts of fingerpointing. This is just more of the same.
